In this post we'll learn about increasing the maximum distance at which GPON port operates.

Default, GPON is designed to be used at 0-20 km distances.
As SFPs become more powerful, for example, C++ type has around 6.5 dBm launch power, it makes sense to utilize a longer fiber span, where needed.
By modifying the following settings, we can extend the range, to support long-range deployments.

conf t
interface gpon-olt_1/2/5
shutdown
range-mode 100 300
no shutdown

Note, a range-mode parameter of 100 300 means 10000 - 30000 meters.
You can also set 0 300, if you have ONTs at shorter distances, but its recommended to keep the ONTs in a 20 km fiber span.

How to copy entire PON configuration from one port to another, on ZTE OLTs.

In this post we'll learn how to move the PON configuration for a C300/C320 OLT.

If you need to move all the ONTs from one PON port to another, the simplest method for copying the configuration, is to use the following commands.

1. Make sure the destination PON is empty, with no registered ONUs.

2. Run the commands

conf t
pon
copy gpon olt gpon-olt_1/2/3 gpon-olt_1/2/4

This will copy all the ONUs and their settings from gpon-olt_1/2/3 to gpon-olt_1/2/4.

3. The "copy" command does not copy the "range-mode" parameters of the PON port. If you are using the range-mode setting, you'll have to put the receiving PON port in shutdown mode before changing range.

LOSi errors on GPON networks and how to avoid them.

One easily overlooked cause of LOSi errors in GPON architectures is the colour matching of the fiber patch with the ONT.

Solution: Always match the color of the patch connector with the colour of the inside connector of the ONT, OLT or EDFA.

If the inside connector of the ONT has a blue color edge, use a blue patch/connector. Whenever you pass the signal from a blue color (SC-PC) to green(SC-APC) or vice-versa you lose between 3dBm up to 4 dBm, depending on circumstances and the quality of the patches.
Also, your chance to induce a back reflection on entire PON, rises. Thus, when mixing colours, it is possible that at some point, all the ONTs on a PON fiber wire to disconnect at the same time for a few seconds with the cause: LOSi.

Other causes for LOSi Error can be fiber twisted or bent excessively.
