Goblenul apărut în secolul XVII este un gen de tapiserie denumit astfel după produsele manufacturii Gobelins, un vestit centru francez de artă decorativă.
Goblenulse realizează pornind cu răbdane, dar și cu nerăbdare, de la o pânză albă, un set complet de ațe muline de bumbac de diferite culori, un set de diagrame cu simboluri ordonate după o axă bidimensională, fiecare simbol corespunzând unei culori și un ac de cusut spe un obiect de artă.
