♻️ Europe wants to lead on recycling, but its recycling industry is breaking down.

🚢 The reason is not lack of ambition, but a flood of cheap imports sold as recycled plastic that are often made from virgin oil based materials.

💸 Virgin plastic is cheaper than recycled plastic today, so some exporters label new plastic as recycled and dump it into Europe, pushing honest local recyclers out of the market.

🏭 The damage is real and already visible, 2025 was the worst year on record for recycling capacity losses, with major plants closing in the Netherlands and across Europe.

📦 The EU plans a major fix in 2026 by creating separate customs codes for virgin and recycled plastics, a technical change that finally allows proper tracking and control.

🔍 Brussels is moving from trust to verification, planning audits of non‑European recycling plants that supply the EU to check that materials labelled as recycled are genuinely recycled.

🌍 This goes beyond recycling targets and raises a bigger question, are we entering an era where supply chain sovereignty matters more than global efficiency?

The score looks at the full life cycle, including water used to make the fabric, CO₂ emissions, how recyclable the item is, and a special fast fashion coefficient that penalises ultra fast, low durability items. ♻️

It is voluntary at the start, but once a brand makes green claims about a product, it must publish the score on the official portal and use the French format, online or in store. This is how France wants to fight greenwashing and push better design. 🚫
This is also a signal to the rest of Europe. If consumers can compare two T shirts by impact, price will not be the only decision factor anymore. Better textiles will win. 👚

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 ♻️

In 2023 the EU reached 42.1% plastic packaging recycling, up from 38.2% in 2013, so the trend is going in the right direction 📈

Belgium, Latvia and Slovakia are leading with rates between 54% and 60%, showing what is possible when collection and producer responsibility work well ✅

Romania is still below the EU average and closer to the group with lower results, like Hungary, France or Austria. This means we need better separate collection, a return system that works nationwide and stronger reporting from companies 🇷🇴

Each person in the EU generated 35.3 kg of plastic packaging in 2023 and only 14.8 kg was recycled, so we still lose a lot of valuable material 🧋
