Did You Know?
Every week, we'll introduce you some findings about medicine, from more or less known countries in this world.
Romania may not be as well-known in North America as the Western European countries, but that doesn't mean it is an insignificant part of the world. Here are some facts of significance you might not have known about or have associated with Romania:
Insulin: the first substance proved to have a normalizing effect on blood sugar levels - pancreatine (the predecessor of insulin) was discovered by Romanian physiologist, professor of medicine: Nicolae Paulescu. Between 1914 and 1916, Dr. Paulescu performed experiments in which he obtained an anti-diabetic pancreatic extract. In 1916 his extract, injected into diabetic dogs, reduced blood glucose levels.
Romanian physician, biologist, and one of the earliest bacteriologists, Victor Babeş, discovered more than 50 germs and a cure for a disease named after him, "Babesiosis".
Ribosomes: another Romanian biologist, George Emil Palade, cell biologist, received the Nobel Prize for his study of internal organization of such cell structures as mitochondria, chloroplast, the Golgi apparatus, and for the discovery of ribosomes.
The cervical cancer screening test: Aurel Babes has discovered the screening test for cervical test which probably saved many women’s lives. Although Papanikolau was credited for the invention of this test by cervical cytology, Babes was the one that discovered that a platinum loop used in the test would help determine if cancer cells were present. His research was published in 1927. It must be noted that his method of testing is different to that of Papanikolau;
Anti-ageing cream: The anti-ageing cream was invented by Ana Aslan, who was a Romanian biologist and physician. Her cream, called Gerovital contains procaine which has anti-ageing effects. Her creams were used by personalities such as John F. Kenedy, Charlie Chaplin and Salvador Dali. The cream can still be bought today.

MD versus MBBS
MD or MBBS?
What is MBBS?
MBBS is an undergraduate, first professional degree in medicine. MBBS courses are designed to train students in all fields of medicine.
The courses include Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Applied Medical Biochemistry, Applied Pharmacology, Human Pathology, Human Microbiology, Otolaryngology, Dermatology, Paediatrics and even General Surgery. Although it varies between countries, a MBBS degree is typically completed in 4 and a half years. In most countries, the student is required to complete an internship before being awarded the degree in order to demonstrate enough exposure. This is so that the students have a qualified amount of practical exposure.
What is MD?
MD is a Masters/Postgraduate degree. A candidate becomes eligible for MD only after successfully completing a MBBS degree. Some countries consider a MD degree a professional doctorate for surgeons and physicians (i.e. U.S. A and Philippines). Others, consider it a research degree equal in value to a Ph. D.
Therefore, a student completes a MD after the MBBS to obtain training on a specialization of choice. MD specializations include Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and the like. An MD is expected to gradually make the student a specialist in the Medical branch of choice.
