Motorcycle Speed from Gear
The basic technique of "Speed from Gear" is the same for any vehicle when you can get or estimate RPM, a total gear ratio between the engine and drive wheel(s), and the wheel diameter. You just take the Engine revs per minute, convert that with the primary gearing X transmission gearing X final drive (rear end) gearing to get Wheel Revs per minute, then find tire circumference and you've got Feet per minute, convert that to your favorite units (usually ft/s or mph for me).

One drawback with motorcycles is that the engine speed can range by a factor of 10 (say, 1,400 RPM chugging away, but 14,000RPM for sporty 4-cylinders at full-song). But if you can pin down the RPM, the technique is good. This enthusiastic rider thought by covering the MPH reading on the screen, he was protecting himself.
