The Legendary and powerful Poenari Fortress is one of the oldest and most legendary fortresses connected to Vlad the Impaler, but its origins go back before Vlad's time. The fortress became famous during the reign of Vlad III Dracula (Vlad Tepeș) in the mid-1400s. According to Romanian chronicles and legends, Vlad discovered the old ruined fortress and ordered it rebuilt and expanded into a major mountain citadel. Tradition says he forced disloyal boyars from Târgoviste to rebuild the fortress by carrying stones up the mountain. This story became one of the most famous legends connected to Vlad Dracula.
