Bucharest Delta
Explore a lush ecosystem that thrives between concrete walls.
Enter an abandoned artificial lake site in the south-eastern part of Bucharest that nature has turned into a rich and fertile ecosystem. Construction started in 1986 as part of the city’s flooding prevention system, but it never served that purpose.
Today, on these 190 hectares of abandoned reservoir, an ecosystem of wetlands has developed. About 90 species of birds, many of which are protected by current legislation, together with mammals and invertebrates, live together in a vast area that is about 5 subway stops from downtown Bucharest.
For this reason, Văcărești lake has been named Bucharest’s delta. Remarkably, in the last 20 years, nature has flourished in the absence of any human interference. And more importantly, as we speak, the Romanian government is working on turning this area into a protected nature park.

Where to stay?
Most of Bucharest's tourist attractions and sights are located downtown, as are its best places to eat and drink. Of the 3 squares there, Universitatii is the most pleasant for visitors. There is also Unirii Square, which is the shopping district, and Romana Square is well-connected though more residential.
Planning your Bucharest visit
How many days?
2 or 3 nights will probably be enough in Bucharest, but why not stay a little longer to enjoy day trips to Romania's nearby historic sites? Sinaia, Brasov, and Transylvannia are all unmissable!
