As it’s been Pet Dental Month in February, lots of vets will have been talking about how to care for your pet’s teeth and you probably have heard them talk about the VOHC Seal of Approval. But what actually is it and what does it stand for? The Veterinary Oral Health Council is an international, independent body made up of veterinary dentists and dental specialists. Collectively they assess clinical trial data submitted to them by the manufacturers of pet dental products. In order to receive the VOHC Seal Of Approval the product must have undergone two independent, separate trials, following a protocol set by the VOHC, and they need to show the products reduce plaque and/or tartar build up by at least 10%. Which doesn’t sound much but will have a significant impact on your pet’s dental health. This is why when I recommend dental products I always look for ones with the VOHC seal, or backed by a significant amount of science and made by a reputable company.
