Purchased proposal 🍾 We’re thrilled that the Akranes Municipality has purchased our proposal for the town’s expansion into a new smart district. Emerging from a former industrial area, the new 95.000m2 neighborhood resides on 5 pillars: repurposing structures, smart mobility, circular economy, modularity and scalability.
The unique location of the site enables to create a new sustainable neighborhood that reconnects the urban life to nature while becoming a valuable anchor point for Akranes. The ambition is to create a district that will act as a laboratory for future urban development to showcase how sustainable housing development can be combined with circular resource thinking, and social diversity.

Arquitetos portuenses já vão no terceiro concurso ganho na Islândia Depois de dois jardins-de-infância, o atelier Sastudio, sedeado na UPTEC, vai também criar um centro comunitário.

LCP | Our winning design challenges the existing planning for housing, taking into account the town’s population desire for a new centrality in this unique location. We propose a multifunctional hall, a public structure that can accommodate several functions as well as activate and support outdoor activities.
The building rises gently from the ground, minimizing its visual impact while shielding the new plaza from dominant winds and opening its footprint to maximize sun exposure. The green roof extends the local flora, and becomes a continuation of the pedestrian coastal promenade.

Awards' ceremonies in times of Covid. We're happy and honoured that our proposal for the new Husavik Senior Center has received a jury mention!

- The concept resides in providing clear views over the unique landscape, while ensuring a strong physical relation with the surrounding nature: the volume grows in height to capture extensive panoramic views over the Skjálfandi.
The floors detach from each other, breaking the scale of the building: although it is composed by four floors, it spreads through the topography, never having the perception of more than one floor on top of each other.
Each floor extends to the green roof over the floor below as an elevated garden, a foreground to every apartments’ views. Being at ground level and on the upper floor will feel as equal in the relation with the immediate nature.
The design intent aims to give every apartment a direct view over the landscape across the bay, while all common areas open towards the immediate nature of the hill where the building sits, surrounded by exterior terraces and gardens, inviting for outdoor activities.

Sastudio + Homing Homes for Grupo Casais

Developed together with ‘Homing Homes, the Origami Series are our first prototypes of “Enhanced Environmental Profile Buildings”© for Grupo Casais.
Aiming for maximum sustainability, seeks to minimize the environmental impact, increase the efficiency of the available resources and increase ecological awareness.
Origami consists on a modular housing typology, easily adaptable to the widest range of different inhabitants and contexts.
For its flexibility in several possible configurations – both in volumetry and materiality, allows for a unique architecture from a generic basis.

The project aims for the creation of a multipurpose space that performs both as an auditorium and as a sheltered community space.
Its strong positioning in the central axis of the Master Plan could mean a barrier for circulation, instead, the idea is to turn it into part of the path, as a breakout area for the Arts’ village by connecting classrooms and workshop spaces, students, and visitors.
The design takes into consideration the existing masterplan guidelines and the climatic conditions of the Sédhiou Region of the Casamance proposing a roofing structure that could provide both shading and rain protection.
Since the auditorium faces the entrance of the village, the roof movement opens it towards the visitors in a welcoming gesture, while to the Southern side towards the campus, it slopes down, blending smoothly with the landscape.
The resulting shape maximizes the auditorium audience capacity by having a covered front-facing row and an extended exterior seating area on the landscape.
The design aims to experiment ferrocement on its endless formwork possibilities, for being easily buildable and made of a mix of sand from the site with cement that is largely available in the region. The grand majority of the construction is earth-based, with rammed earth walls, and pressed-earth flooring.

For its uniqueness regarding program complexity and functional complementarities, this project represents a great opportunity to explore new concepts of spaces for living, learn, growth and play, breaking the conservative approach of traditional community centers and binding together all generations.
It aims to represent a new beacon of life. Beyond an architectural project, the New Center is as well an urbanistic statement: connecting the surrounding territory with the creation of a public plaza and a green park, and extending the public realm to its interior by allocating program that will be used by all inhabitants.
The architectural concept interprets the new center as a place of community. The central space of the new building is a courtyard framed by public program, where buildings stack on each other, creating passages on the intersections in an inviting gesture.
The buildings revolve on themselves in order to create the environment of a communal space, a continuous loop that merges contextual architecture with a contemporary language applied to the local scale and formal elements.

“The project reveals a great concern in its urban insertion, both at urban and volumetric levels. The result is remarkable in its formal point of view, never missing its readability of a unified and coherent complex, the morphologic variety offered by its composition […] results in the dilution of the built massing that scatters on multiple scales e dimensions. This shape, together with the clever way of how relations are drawn between massing and openings, as well as the good relation with the topography, results on a well-balanced proposal of great urban and architectonical quality.
The maturity of the proposal offers great accurateness and sensibility to its context, program, and especially to the idea of what it could – and should – be a school in this place.
The way how circulations articulate with the program creates great richness, with moments of broad functional diversity: corridors, atriums, break out spaces, interior/exterior connections, courtyards interconnected in a fluid and continuous way, creating a diversity of environments, where natural light, materiality, and spatiality concur to define a remarkable spatial complexity.” Report from the Jury

The building is conceived in a way that can simultaneously give the feeling of continuity and fragmentation: searches for an overall image of row houses around a shared courtyard.
Rather than adopting the massive scale of a public building, the design intent pretends to achieve a smaller scale of dwellings, giving the feeling of homeownership and belonging to its users.
The unique natural environment of the place is taken into consideration, every single apartment has a direct view over the Fjords, while all common spaces open towards the exterior terraces and gardens, inviting for outdoor activities.
The Center is comprised of three residential units, the one at the entrance level hosts 12 apartments, and the ones at the courtyard level are of 8 and 10 apartments. Nurses’ stations and support rooms are placed between the units and the vertical connections, making work processes highly efficient. Shorter and longer walks around the building with varying visual references and pleasant quiet zones ensure diverse free movement opportunities.

In times when schools - and half the world - are closed, we share our latest proposal for a kindergarten in the outskirts of Prague. The shape revolves around a central indoor playing area for winter months, while the four classrooms open towards the outdoor playgrounds and farming gardens
