We are deeply saddened by the passing of Guus Bierman, founder of Contender Sailcloth and a true pioneer in the sailmaking industry.

Guus played a fundamental role in shaping modern sailcloth technology and supporting generations of sailors and sailmakers around the world. His passion for sailing and innovation helped push the sport forward.

At PL Sails, we are grateful for the materials, vision, and legacy he brought to our industry.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire Contender community.

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of Contender Sailcloth founder Guus Bierman. Guus passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026.

Born in Amsterdam in 1938, Guus was a lifelong sailor, visionary entrepreneur, and driving force behind one of the world’s leading sailcloth manufacturers. Since founding Contender in 1986, he helped shape modern sailmaking, from Olympic success to multiple victories in the America’s Cup.
Sailing was always at the heart of his life. Whether competing in international regattas or supporting yacht clubs and young sailors, his passion for the sport never faded.

Guus leaves behind a remarkable legacy in sailing and an enduring impact on our industry. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the entire Contender community.
