The CETUS Project is a cetacean monitoring programme based at CIIMAR 🐳🔍

CETUS Project started in 2012, with the aim of collecting cetacean occurrence data in the Eastern North Atlantic to study their distribution and habitat. At the moment, it is constituted by a small team of young researchers, each of them specialising in a topic of cetacean ecology but working together to produce integrated analyses and valuable results for cetacean conservation. Over time, CETUS Project has built solid collaborations from which they are eager to learn, apply their expertise in the CETUS study area, and investigate novel approaches to cetacean ecology. Within CETUS, the following monitoring activities are ongoing:

- Visual monitoring, along long-transect routes, onboard large vessels used as platforms of opportunity. This is possible thanks to CETUS collaborations with Transinsular (a Portuguese shipping company), the Hydrographic Institute of the Portuguese Navy, and the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere - IPMA. These collaborations allow the collection of cetacean occurrence data in a wide range area, between Mainland Portugal and the Macaronesian archipelagos, covering offshore waters.

- "Botos da Foz": a visual land-based monitoring programme at the mouth of Douro River (Porto, Portugal), in which the focus species is the endangered harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). The CETUS team also participates in dedicated cetacean monitoring campaigns, in the scope of the ATLANTIDA Project, during which data on cetacean occurrence, photo-ID, blow samples, biopsies, environmental DNA and acoustic recordings are collected off the northern coast of Continental Portugal. Furthermore, CETUS Project assumes an active role in environmental education by giving talks in schools and universities, organising cetacean-related workshops/courses, supervising students (bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees) and integrating them in monitoring activities, providing hands-on experience to the interns.

[EN] Our observers have recorded an impressive diversity of dolphin species, including:

✅ Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus)
✅ Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus)
✅ Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba)
✅ Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis)
✅ Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis)
✅ Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

And identifying them at sea can sometimes be a real challenge 👀 Luckily, that’s exactly what our observers are there for!

[EN] The Monte da Guia crew came across three Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). The individual in the photos, most likely an adult male, approached the vessel, appearing to show some interest in the boat before continuing on its way.

A curious detail about this species: adult males can become heavily marked with scars from interactions with other males. Over time, these marks give them a very distinctive appearance, almost as if their bodies were “scratched.”

[EN] Somewhere between Ponta Delgada and Lisbon, the Monte da Guia cargo ship had an exciting encounter with one of the ocean’s giants: a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) 🐋

The whale surfaced alongside the vessel, allowing the crew to observe one of the largest whale species up close.

[EN] Today we had a different kind of CETUS team meeting!

Instead of meeting at our usual spot, we headed to CMIA Matosinhos to meet with the CMIA team. Our meeting was, as always, a chance to catch up on CETUS activities. But this time, we also had the opportunity to learn more about the work developed by CMIA, discover where our interests and expertise overlap, and talk about how we can support each other and work together in the future.

It was a great opportunity to bring two teams closer and think about new ways of contributing to the protection of the marine environment we all care about. 🌊🐋

Thank you to the CMIA team for welcoming us! 💙

Another collaborative effort involving the CETUS team, contributing to the development of more reliable and reproducible approaches for marine vertebrate eDNA metabarcoding. Congratulations to all the authors! 🌊

New paper from the EMPHATIC team!

How much can the way we process eDNA affect what we find?

In this study, we tested different DNA extraction methods and polymerases and developed MVeM, an open-source and reproducible bioinformatics pipeline for marine vertebrate eDNA metabarcoding.

Among the findings, we showed that different approaches can perform better depending on the group being studied, with important implications for monitoring both cetaceans and fish.

[EN] Over the past few weeks, our observers onboard the Monte Brasil cargo ship have been lucky enough to have close encounters with Gervais’ (Mesoplodon europaeus), Sowerby’s (Mesoplodon bidens) and Blainville’s (Mesoplodon densirostris) beaked whales along routes connecting mainland Portugal with the Azores and Madeira.

Beaked whales are among the least known mammals on the planet. They spend most of their lives underwater, diving to great depths to feed mainly on cephalopods, which makes them particularly difficult to study 🧐

A great collaborative effort, with contributions from the CETUS team! Congratulations to all the authors on this publication! 🐬

Our latest paper is out!

Can a dolphin's breath tell us about its health? In our new study, we used exhaled breath condensate (EBC) to characterise the respiratory microbiome of free-ranging cetaceans using non-invasive methods. 🐬🧬

We identified distinct respiratory microbiomes in common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), clearly different from the surrounding seawater. We also provide the first characterisation of the respiratory microbiota of the common dolphin, establishing an important baseline for future health assessments and pathogen monitoring in wild cetaceans.

These findings highlight the potential of cetacean "blow" as a valuable tool for non-invasive health monitoring. 🐳
