A sport dog and a real protection dog can look very similar… until you remove the sleeve.

Sport has rules, equipment and a predictable setup.
Real protection has to work in different environments, with different people and without depending on obvious equipment.

And the most important part? Control.

A real protection dog should be stable, neutral and safe — until there is a genuine reason to switch on.

Your dog may look perfectly trained at home or when nothing interesting is happening.

Then another dog appears.

Someone runs past.

Prey drive kicks in.

Suddenly the obedience disappears.

With serious working dogs, the real question isn't whether the dog can obey when he's calm.

It's whether you still have control when drive goes up.

That's where training really matters.

A dog can look amazing doing obedience beside a professional trainer.

But what happens tomorrow morning when the trainer isn't there and your dog sees another dog?

That's the real test.

My goal isn't simply to make your dog look good in obedience. It's to give you the skills to manage your own dog in real life.

Freedom without losing control. Drive without drive taking over everything.

That's a much more useful dog.

There is an important difference between leash pressure and e-collar pressure.

A leash physically guides the dog in a direction.

The sensation from an e-collar doesn't.

So even if your dog understands leash pressure perfectly, you cannot simply assume he understands what the e-collar means.

That connection has to be taught first, using behaviors the dog already knows in a simple environment.

Your dog reacts to another dog. You press the e-collar and the barking stops.

Problem solved?

Not necessarily.

Stopping a behavior and teaching a dog are two very different things.

If the dog hasn't first learned what the e-collar sensation means and what response is expected, adding pressure during a highly emotional situation can simply create more confusion.

Teach first. Correct later.

A Boerboel is not a giant Shih Tzu.

And one of the biggest mistakes I see owners make is training a serious guardian breed exactly like they would train a normal pet dog.

Boerboels are not necessarily difficult to train. But you need to understand the type of dog you have in front of you and train accordingly.

The wrong approach can create much bigger problems later.
