Someone in the crowd at my talk in Belgium asked me a question I've never been asked before...

It was Andrew Smith a director at Vinted, and he asked:

“You’ve interviewed so many CEOs. How can you tell if a person, brand or company is truly living its purpose, and not just using it as marketing?”

I said:

I look at what they are willing to lose.

The clearest indicator that someone is true to their purpose is by counting all the ways they’ve been willing to sacrifice short-term rewards and an easier life, in the pursuit of it.

History is full of examples:

✅ Patagonia gave away the entire company to fight climate change, prioritising the planet over personal wealth.

✅ Nelson Mandela giving up 27 years of freedom.

✅ Malala taking a bullet for her right to learn.

History tells us that real purpose comes with costs that purposeless people, brands and companies would never choose to pay.

So...

Purpose is not proven by what you say,
It’s proven by what you’re willing to lose.
