Laguna Grande, experiences lights out. Nature goes through cycles and although the bioluminescence is dark, it will return and once again the glowing waters will stretch our imaginations.

06/14/26 Update: Sargassum has been washing ashore on Caribbean beaches, in massive amounts, since last summer – although reports of unprecedented levels of this phenomenon have been documented since 2011 on the shoreline of the Riviera Maya, and Puerto Rico in 2015.

What is it?
It’s called Sargassum, brown algae (seaweed), a term coined by Portuguese sailors—which has even been attributed to Christopher Columbus (1492 expedition: first time someone reported crossing the Sargasso Sea). Today, many, many, species of Sargassum have been identified; however, Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans are the most relevant to us.

Sargassum strandings, or the accumulation of Sargassum seaweed on beaches, can have significant impacts on coastal ecosystems and human populations. While Sargassum provides habitat for marine life in the ocean, its large-scale accumulation on beaches can lead to negative consequences.

Did you know? Sargassum is edible, it’s harvested to feed livestock too, and you can fry, boil, steam or dry it. It’s played a part in Chinese medicine as far back as the 8th century, treating goiters (high iodine content) — and made into tea to control phlegm.

At this time we are seeing adverse effects and nightly reports are that bioluminescence is 0%, this is subject to change based on the amount of sargasso and the duration of time it spends stranded in Las Croabas harbor, we will post updates weekly!
