You survived Tłusty Czwartek (Feb 12).
But did you know the party isn't over yet?
Tuesday, February 17, 2026 = Ostatki (Poland's Carnival Finale).
What is Ostatki?
The last 6 days of carnival (Feb 12-17) before Lent begins. The finale is Shrove Tuesday, also called Śledzik (Herring Day).
What happens:
🐟 Eat LOTS of herring (in various forms)
🥃 Drink vodka (traditional pairing)
🎉 Final carnival parties before 40 days of fasting
Why herring?
Catholics prepare for Lent = no meat for 40 days. Fish is allowed, so herring becomes the star.
Herring dishes to try:
• Śledź w śmietanie (herring in sour cream)
• Śledź po japońsku (Japanese-style, but Polish)
• Tatar śledziowy (herring tartare)
Where to celebrate:
• Traditional balls (Bale Ostatków) — fancy, 150-300 PLN
• Pub crawls / club nights — casual, 30-80 PLN
• Home gatherings (most common)
Cultural bonus:
🔥 Marzanna tradition — burning a straw effigy to symbolize winter's end (ancient Slavic ritual)
Source
What comes next:
⛪ Ash Wednesday (Feb 18) = Lent begins
• 40 days of fasting
• No meat on Fridays
• No parties until Easter (April 5)

Thursday, February 12, 2026 = Poland's Tłusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday).
If you're an expat and you're wondering "why is everyone talking about donuts?" — here's your full explainer.
What is it?
The last Thursday before Lent (Catholic fasting period). Tradition says: eat as many pączki (filled donuts) as you can before 40 days of restraint.
By the numbers:
🍩 100 MILLION pączki eaten in Poland in ONE day
🍩 Average Pole eats 2.5 pączki (some eat 5+)
🍩 Bakeries sell out by noon in popular spots
Source
Why you should care:
1️⃣ Cultural immersion (it's a BIG deal here)
2️⃣ Superstition: Polish saying claims if you don't eat a pączek, you'll have bad luck all year
3️⃣ They're DELICIOUS (soft, fluffy, filled with jam, dusted with sugar)
Inside this carousel:
• What Tłusty Czwartek actually is
• Pączki vs. regular donuts (not the same!)
• Traditional vs. modern fillings
• The superstition (eat or suffer bad luck)
• How to participate as an expat
Pro tips:
✅ Go to bakeries before 10 AM (they sell out fast)
✅ Try rose hip filling first (most traditional)
✅ Budget: ~5-8 PLN per pączek
Save this. Share it with expat friends.
And comment "PĄCZKI" if you're ready for Thursday.

Poland is preparing for one of the coldest waves in years.
If you're an expat and this is your first real Polish winter — listen up.
The facts:
📅 Peak cold: Monday, February 2, 2026
🌡️ Temperatures: -6°C to -16°C daytime / -30°C at night in Mazovia
⏱️ Duration: Thursday, Jan 30 → Thursday, Feb 5+

Ferie isn’t a holiday.
It’s a season.
And seasons work better when you stop improvising every single day.
Mazovia winter break: 19 Jan – 1 Feb 2026.
This carousel is not “10 random ideas.”
It’s a way to make Warsaw feel easy for two weeks.
One rule: choose less, but choose it on purpose.
(And yes, ice rinks + one indoor anchor can save your sanity)
If you’re an expat here: you don’t need more options.
You need a plan that fits real life.
Save this. Send it to your “let’s do something” friend.
And check official pages before you go (details change).

Two weeks of winter break can feel like a gift…
or like a logistics problem.
Especially if you’re new in Warsaw and your “local parent network” is still loading.
This carousel is my shortcut: 10 ideas that work even when it’s cold, windy, and dark at 4PM.
Start with the basics: Mazovia winter break is 19 Jan – 1 Feb 2026.
My personal rule:
Pick one “big yes” (like Wilanów lights) and two “easy wins” (ice rink + indoor spot).
If you save only one thing this week — save this post.
If you share only one thing — share it with the friend who’s running out of ideas.
Always verify details before going (hours/events change).

HOW TO GET 60+ DAYS OFF IN 2026 (Using Only 25 Vacation Days) 🏖️📅
Working in Poland as an expat and want to maximize your time off?
Let me show you how to turn 25 vacation days into **62 DAYS OFF** in 2026.
No tricks. No loopholes. Just smart planning.
🌉 THE CONCEPT: BRIDGE DAYS (Dni Pomostowe)
A "bridge day" is when you strategically take 1-2 vacation days to connect a public holiday with a weekend, creating extended time off.
Example:
• Holiday on Thursday
• Take Friday off (1 vacation day)
• = 4-day weekend (Thu-Sun)
Polish people do this ALL THE TIME. It's called "robić sobie długi weekend."
Now it's your turn to master it.

ŚWIĘTO TRZECH KRÓLI: What's Happening in Poland TODAY ⭐👑
If you're in Poland today (January 6th), you might be wondering:
"Why are there people in costumes and paper crowns everywhere?"
Let me explain 👇
Today is Święto Trzech Króli (Three Kings Day / Epiphany) — one of the BIGGEST celebrations in Poland.
And I mean BIG:
• Nearly 2 MILLION people participating across Poland today
• ~1,000 cities hosting colorful street processions
• Largest Catholic event of the year in the country
🎭 WHAT'S HAPPENING:
The Orszak Trzech Króli (Three Kings Procession) is a massive public celebration where:
• People dress as biblical characters (Three Wise Men, angels, shepherds, Mary & Joseph)
• Everyone gets FREE paper crowns 👑
• Processions wind through city streets
• Carol singing (kolędy) fills the air
• Led by the Star of Bethlehem ⭐
It's like a mobile nativity scene — colorful, joyful, and incredibly beautiful.
📍 IN WARSAW TODAY:
• Procession gathers ~11:00-12:00
• Starts around 13:00
• Ends at Plac Zamkowy (Castle Square)
• FREE to join or watch
💡 Full details in slides above! →

🇵🇱 WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT IN POLAND?
Epiphany celebrates the Three Wise Men visiting Baby Jesus with gifts (gold, frankincense, myrrh).
In Poland:
• It's a national public holiday (since 2011)
• Banks, offices, shops CLOSED today
• Families attend processions together
• Special King Cake (ciasto) with hidden almond inside
• Door blessing tradition: "20+K+M+B+26" written in chalk
For Poles, this is as meaningful as Christmas itself.
—
👥 CAN EXPATS JOIN?
YES! Everyone is welcome:
✅ Just show up (no registration)
✅ FREE paper crowns handed out
✅ No religious obligation (cultural experience)
✅ Respectful observation encouraged
It's one of Poland's most unique and beautiful traditions.

Polish men are a unique blend: traditional values meet modern ambition. They're chivalrous but expect partnership. They're emotionally deep but not openly expressive at first.
