Evaluating the success of a new software implementation should not be based solely on the system going live. The key factor is determining whether the solution achieves the defined goals and delivers real value to the organisation.

A large part of the new software implementation plan is choosing the right implementation type, as there is no singular, universal "right". Making a good choice requires striking the right balance between time, risk and cost, and different types help you achieve just that.
The most common options include:
▪️Direct implementation (Big Bang): Involves switching the entire organisation to the new software and at the same time discontinuing the old system - all processes immediately operate in the new environment. In our three-attribute rating system, it would be the fastest and cheapest, but also the most risky.
▪️Parallel implementation: Assumes the simultaneous use of both the new and old systems for a certain period. Data is entered and compared in both environments, allowing the organisation to gradually build trust in the new solution. It's the most secure type, but the costs might be piling up if the parallel system's uptime is prolonged.
▪️Phased implementation: Involves gradually launching the system, for example, module by module or department by department. Each stage is tested and stabilised before moving on to the next one. This method offers a lower risk and an opportunity to optimise costs and implementation time, gradually improving the process.
▪️Pilot implementation: Involves deploying the system on a limited scale, for example, within one team, branch, or process. Only after successful testing is the solution rolled out across the entire organisation. Pilot lets your organisation evaluate attributes on a smaller scale and helps you make the best choice.

Successful software implementation is much more than just launching a new system.
A well-executed implementation process usually consists of six key phases:
▪️Analysis & goal definition
▪️Project planning & scheduling
▪️System development & configuration
▪️Testing & validation
▪️Integration & user training
▪️Go-live & post-implementation support
Each stage plays a critical role in reducing risk, improving adoption, and ensuring the solution delivers real business value. Companies that treat implementation as a strategic process are far more likely to achieve successful digital transformation.
What implementation challenge has been the biggest in your organization?

New article on FINANTEQ Blog - read our strategy for successfull software implementation:
https://www.finanteq.com/blog-posts/how-to-successfully-implement-new-software
"Replacing or modernising business software is one of the highest-risk initiatives organisations undertake. Failed implementation can disrupt daily operations for months and severely strain company budged. Constant market pressure and high expectations from users – both internal and external – require fast, stable, and innovative solutions.
Unfortunately, developing a new IT system or modernising software involves significant risk. According to the CHAOS Report published by The Standish Group (2020 edition – the latest available), as many as 50% of IT projects exceed their budgets or deadlines, while 19% are cancelled. Only the remaining 31% are implemented on time and within the planned budget.
The process of delivering IT projects is complex, and success depends not only on selecting the right tools and solutions but above all on a well-planned implementation strategy."

A successful software implementation rarely happens by accident. Behind every smooth rollout is a well-thought-out plan that connects business goals, people, processes, and technology.
So why does software implementation planning matter so much? Here are a few takeaways 👇

We covered the comparison between Out-of-the-Box and Custom Software, but what about other important factors that you might have to consider?
To avoid potential bottlenecks and future proof the implementation it's best to analyse:
▪️Change management
▪️Security and regulatory compliance
▪️ROI
▪️Hybrid flexibility of OOB with custom elements

There is no clear winner when comparing Out-of-the-Box, Custom Software, and Hybrid solutions, as each approach offers different advantages and disadvantages depending on the organization’s priorities, budget, timeline, and long-term strategy.
