Alistair Darling: momentous day for UK as a whole as Scotland rejects independence 19/09/2014

After yesterday's Scottish vote on secession, the result is that Scotland stays in the UK! 55,3% voted No on the famously six-word question "Should Scotland be an independent country?" This leaves the leader of the independent Scotland movement as well as Prime minister of Scotland Alex Salmond defeated and Better Together leader Alistair Darling (yes, we do think that's a lovely name) victorious. In this video Darling gives a well-prepared speech, indicating that the referendum's results show that "the silent have spoken." He invites the opponents to future political debate. Among 34 of Scotland's administrative regions, only four had a majority of Yes votes, despite Sean Connery's involvement (the No campaign had J.K. Rowling on their side). However, some English MPs are already condemning David Cameron for the promises he gave to the Scottish to gain their support of remaining in the Union. So, it looks like there will not be a new British flag for some time still!

Stay with us: David Cameron's desperate plea to Scots - Telegraph 11/09/2014

While the UK's citizens continue their long-harbored reservations about their place in the European Union, they have their own problems at home. With support for Scottish independence at a higher percentage level than ever, it really seems that the UK's membership in the EU is not their biggest issue at the present time. David Cameron has now been heard making the same arguments towards the proud Scots that the EU has been making towards the Brits in an effort to placate them. The Telegraph referred to his plea as "desperate" and indeed it is not a picture of the fabled English composure. In an answer to the potential prospect of the Union splitting, the pound sterling has fallen sharply and British stocks have already incurred significant losses. What is the fate of the United Kingdom? We shall see in a week.

Donald (Tusk) Ducks Language Issue, Promises Enhanced English 02/09/2014

Polish PM Donald Tusk is going to be the chief of the European Council as of December. Despite the fact that this is huge news for Poland, you might notice that this event was not newsworthy enough for the English-speaking world to make it e.g. to the front page of English-language Wikipedia. Sadly, Mr Tusk has been criticized for his inadequate English skills by foreign (especially British) media outlets. However, the Wall Street Journal loved (sic!) his pun on "polishing his English." Read the article for a more in-depth analysis of the language issues surrounding his post-election speech. Congratulations Prime Minister!

Donald (Tusk) Ducks Language Issue, Promises Enhanced English Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who will take over as the president of the European Council in December, has been criticized for his bad English.

What is the longest English word? - Oxford Dictionaries 22/08/2014

What is the longest word in the English language, you may ask? Well, most English scholars agree that the longest word in English is 'antidisestablishmentarianism' at 28 letters. There are longer words as well, but they are usually technical and very specific or they are the names of chemical compounds (especially proteins) and thus constructed out of the names of their constituents. So, would you like to know what disestablishmentarianism is? In a nutshell, it is the political view that the Church of England should not be disestablished, which in turn means that it should not be removed as the official religion of the United Kingdom. This political sentiment originated in the 19th century in England during the discussions of seperating church and state.
