How To Use A Fire Blanket

Fire blankets, along with fire extinguishers, are fire safety items that can be useful in case of a fire. These nonflammable blankets are helpful in temperatures up to 900 degrees and are useful in smothering small fires by not allowing any oxygen to the fire. Due to its simplicity, a fire blanket may be more helpful for someone who is inexperienced with fire extinguishers. Learn how to use a fire blanket in case of a fire and protect your home or office

Step # 1
Choose the right type of fire blanket for the situation.
Step # 2

Review fire blanket instructions before you need to use it for fire safety reasons

Step # 3
Make certain the fire blanket is stored in an easily accessible quick-release container.

Step # 4
Protect your hands by wrapping them in the top edge of the blanket as you put out a fire.

Step # 5
Use the nonflammable blanket as a shield as you approach the fire.

Step # 6
Place the nonflammable blanket over the fire.

Step # 7
Turn off any heat source, such as a stove burner.

Step # 8
Leave the blanket in place until it's cool to the touch.

Step # 9
Call the fire department immediately from a safe location if the fire blanket is unsuccessful at putting out the fire.

Step # 10
Allow a fire blanket that has been in use at least 30 minutes to cool.

Step # 11
Wrap a fire blanket around someone whose clothes have caught on fire.

Step # 12
Use a nonflammable blanket around your own clothes if you must move through an area on fire.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS:

Fire extinguishers are provided for a 'first attack' fire fighting measure generally undertaken by the occupants of the building before the fire service arrive. Most fires start as a small fire and may be extinguished if the correct type and amount of extinguishing agent is applied whilst the fire is small and controllable.
Fire extinguisher locations must be clearly identified. Extinguishers are colour coded according to the extinguishing agent.

FIRE HOSE REELS:

Fire hose reels are provided for use by occupants as a 'first attack' firefighting measure but may, in some instances, also be used by firefighters.
Fire Hose Reels provide a reasonably accessible and controlled supply of water to combat a potential Class A fire risk.
Because hose reels are generally located next to an exit, in an emergency it is possible to reach a safe place simply by following the hose.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SAFETY HAZARDS:

Hazards can happen anywhere, especially with toddler and preschool children who get into everything around the house. Make sure there aren’t too many items plugged into one outlet, there’s not a shirt hanging over a lamp, or worn out electrical cords anywhere. Among hazards like this, another important fire safety reminder is specifically for in the kitchen, as fires start here more than any other place in the home.
Make sure you go over your fire escape plan and check your smoke detectors a few times throughout the year, and always keep your eye out for safety hazards.
