60–75 YEARS OLD 9 HOURS BACK TO WHERE THEIR CHILDHOOD BEGAN

For the Wakhi people, these mountains are more than just a landscape—they are a part of their childhood, their memories, and their identity.

Many of the elders in this journey once spent their childhood in these very pastures, living a simple life among the mountains, herding livestock, and growing up close to nature. Years later, the younger generation took the responsibility of bringing them back to the places where their childhood memories were made.

The journey was not easy. 8–9 hours of trekking through rugged mountain trails**, yet the mountains never felt them tired—because every step carried a memory, and every view brought back a story from the past.

What makes this journey even more special is the contribution of the volunteers, Boy Scouts, and Girl Guides, who worked together to support and care for the elders throughout the journey.

This was not simply a trek into the mountains.
**It was a journey back in time—a beautiful reunion between generations and the places that shaped them.

“8 Hours on Foot… 50–80 Years of Memories.

**From Passu to Batura Yeshparth — an 8-hour journey on foot.**
For many of our elders, this was never just a difficult trek. It was a part of life.

50, 60, even 80 years ago, they walked these same mountain paths with their families, carrying their belongings and spending their summers in the high pastures. They grew up here, worked here, laughed here, and created memories that stayed with them for a lifetime.

Look at them today—still walking these trails, still smiling, still returning to a place that once felt like home.

**Our grandparents didn’t need luxury to be happy.
Their mountains, their families, and these simple days were enough.**

What we see as an 8-hour trek today, **they remember as childhood.
For us, it’s an 8-hour trek.
For them, it was childhood.

The Women of the Mountains — Our Culture, Our Pride
In

High in the mountains, where life was never easy and modern facilities were almost a distant dream, lived generations of strong Wakhi women. They had little access to formal education and very few comforts, yet they carried something far more valuable—**wisdom, kindness, resilience, and a deep love for their culture.**

These grandmothers grew up surrounded by stone houses, high pastures, and towering mountains. Their hands worked tirelessly for their families, their homes, and their communities. They may not have had many years of schooling, but they learned from life itself—how to survive harsh winters, care for their families, welcome strangers, and keep traditions alive.
And whenever a guest arrived, there was always a smile, a warm welcome, and something to share. **Hospitality was not a luxury; it was a part of who they were.
This photograph is more than a memory. It tells the story of women who lived with less, yet gave so much. Women whose strength helped preserve the language, traditions, clothing, hospitality, and identity of the Wakhi people.
They may have had little education, but they had an education written by the mountains and a wisdom passed down through generations.
Our grandmothers are our history.
Our culture is our identity.
And our traditions are our pride.

A Glimpse Into the Past ❤️🏔️

This photograph captures a beautiful moment from the Wakhi community of Passu in the 1980s—a time when life was much harder, simpler, and filled with struggles.

Our grandparents lived with limited resources and few modern comforts. Yet, look at their faces. Look at those smiles. Despite the hardships, they found happiness in being together, sharing food, sharing stories, and sharing life.

Today, their children and grandchildren live very different lives. Many have moved to cities for education, jobs, and better opportunities. We have more comfort, more facilities, and more choices than they ever had.

But somehow, in the middle of all this progress, many of us are still searching for the peace and happiness that seems so naturally present in these old faces.

Maybe this photograph reminds us of something we often forget: **having less does not always mean living less. Sometimes, happiness is simply found in togetherners
