Four students at Weston Elementary School in California were diagnosed with different types of cancer, including kidney and brain cancer, over a period of several years. The cases raised concerns among parents, who urged authorities to investigate possible environmental factors that could have contributed to the illnesses.

Public attention soon centered on a Sprint cell tower located on the school grounds. More than 200 parents attended school board meetings to voice their concerns, students held protests, and some families transferred their children to other schools. Amid mounting public pressure, Sprint agreed to remove and relocate the cell tower.

During the investigation, officials also identified historical contamination from a nearby former industrial site. The area had previously been polluted with trichloroethylene (TCE), a chemical recognized as a human carcinogen that may have affected local soil and groundwater. Radiation tests conducted by government agencies and independent experts found that emissions from the cell tower were within U.S. federal safety limits, and investigators found no evidence establishing a causal link between the tower and the cancer cases. Although no additional student cancer cases were reported after the tower's removal, experts say there is no proof that the removal was responsible, and the exact cause of the illnesses remains unknown.
