NATURE. DISTANCE. EVOLUTION. RURAL.
FREE. SAD. HAPPY. CONFUSION. ~~~~~~~~ these are the words resonating with Franco Mamaril beginning our last drawing exercise upon deciding to leave Occidental Mindoro before we get stranded in the island because of the incoming typhoons, ending our time in a creative retreat.

Indeed, this residecy program proposed overbearing challenges in approaching Franco's artistic practice, as well as structuring Cultivating a Garden and SUBD.'s creative directions; and to a greater extent, making conscious decisions in order to continue living.

Our 17 days in Mamburao has been productive to say the least. Experiencing the setting alongside creatives led us to territories of inquiries which we are eager to explore further in our next visits!

We were fortunate enough to be in Mamburao at a time of festivities, as they celebrate the 74th founding anniversary of Occidental Mindoro. In the past week, we met artists involved in the 2nd Likhaan Art Competition and Exhibit, continuing a friendship through conversations and perspectives about living in the province and our shared participation in the art world... Before we were able to watch entries for the first ever OKSI AHD Film Festival, we visited booths featuring basketry and textile weaving by the Mangyan people and local produce from different towns of Occidental Mindoro.

... It got harder to keep track of what has happened when dealing with the present: finally, we were able to visit the lighthouse and get to see local pageantry in Sitio Dungon; we spent time roaming the town of Mamburao and met with local artists and witnessed some activities celebrating the Arawatan Festival; and went sight-seeing the river in Calawagan Mountain Resort sharing the setting with a family on vacation... And along these encounters are spaces where we find meaning___.

Being in the remote makes you look to the horizon --- where the sea meets the sky. In looking ahead, it gets harder to define the present, whether alone or in the company of another. It is only when a glowing red sun slowly descends to the sea that we were all taken by a moment. We watched the sun set not longer than a song.

Time flows fluidly like the sun light drawing on sand under water ~~~ it becomes overwhelming when thinking of the possibilities of what can be done with its continued lines.
