A culture-based initiative partnering with Filipino communities towards sustainable development.

21/05/2026

This World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, we are reminded that communities thrive when their stories, traditions, and creative spaces are protected, valued, and allowed to grow.

Cultural diversity helps us remember who we are, understand one another more deeply, and imagine more humane futures together. It is not separate from development. It is part of what makes development meaningful and dignified.

At KOMUNIDA, we believe that building thriving and dignified communities also means protecting the cultures, practices, memories, and expressions that give people a sense of belonging.

Komunida Initiative Lead for Advocacy and Programs Shirley Songalia represented our community at the Ramon Magsaysay Award's Datin Doris Ong Women Empowerment Workshop, "In Forming Tomorrow" held on April 8-10, 2026 in Manila, Philippines.

The workshop brought together 34 leaders and advocates for a meaningful journey of sense-making and panel conversations with Educate Girls, awardees and partner NGOs, alongside hands-on workshops on community building, inclusion and impact. The program also included a guided museum visit, and concluded with a design thinking and pitching ideas to "sharks".

"Creating more spaces for women, and staying open to diverse thoughts and experiences--this is where real power in forming tomorrow begins," shared Songalia in a closing reflection.

Komunida Initiative continues to carry forward these insights in its commitment in co-creating a future where there is no one left behind. Visit www.komunida.org to know more about our work and story.

Komunida Initiative successfully piloted the facilitation of Resilience Builders, our climate education toolkit and card game, with 35 student facilitators from Macatoc National High School in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro.

Through an interactive and reflective gameplay experience, learners explored and , connecting these issues to real community experiences and inequalities.

β€œLubos na nakakaengganyo ang Resilience Builders. Mas napalawak ang aking kaalaman at nahikayat akong umaksyon sa mga epekto nito sa tao kung hindi masosolusyunan ang climate change,” shared Xyriel* (not her real name), 12.

The Resilience Builders Gamified Climate Education Toolkit has officially rolled out at Macatoc National High School in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, advancing efforts to engage youth and ensure meaningful participation in the climate justice movement through innovative, interactive learning. The province of Oriental Mindoro is exposed to an average of 7.2 tropical cyclones annually (2016–2020), with several causing significant agricultural and infrastructure damage. In November 2025, areas including Victoria were affected by Typhoon Tino, which brought heavy rains, strong winds, and displaced at least 333 families across the province.

Through learning sessions and game-based methods, the toolkit transforms complex climate issues into accessible, immersive experiences that encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and action. This initiative empowers students not only to understand the urgency of the climate crisis but also to actively contribute to building resilient, just, and sustainable communities, while recognizing their agency as young leaders.

KOMUNIDA, Inc. is preparing further rollouts and learning sessions across the country, as well as potential collaborations across Asia and the Pacific.

🌿 KAPWA SA KALIKASAN: Huntahan hinggil sa Kasaysayan, Kultura at Komunidad
πŸ“… March 15, 2026 | πŸ•’ 4:00 – 6:00 PM
πŸ’‘ Register now: πŸ”— bit.ly/4r5uu49
