Do you know why people often fail to appreciate what you do for them?

The first time you do something for someone, they feel grateful.

The second time, they start anticipating it. They expect it to happen again.

By the third time, it becomes an expectation—they assume they will receive it.

The fourth time, they feel entitled. They believe they deserve it and want it to continue.

By the fifth time, it has become a dependency. They feel they can’t do without it—they’ve been spoiled.

By the sixth time, you realize there’s no reciprocity. You’re giving, but getting nothing in return. So you stop.

And when you stop, the person you unintentionally spoiled resents you. They feel deprived of something they now believe they deserve. That resentment can even turn into hatred.

That’s why we must set boundaries when giving—because those who receive rarely set limits on how much they take.
