IN PHOTOS: Baluarte de San Gabriel

Constructed in 1593 on the former site of the Hospital de San Gabriel, Baluarte de San Gabriel guarded the riverside sector of Intramuros during the Spanish colonial period. Its guns commanded views of the Chinese settlement of Binondo across the Pasig River and the Pariรกn de Arroceros on the landward side, making it a key component of the Walled City's defenses.

The baluarte was renovated in 1762, heavily damaged during the Battle of Manila in 1945, and restored by the Intramuros Administration in 1989 as part of ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalize the historic fortifications of Intramuros.

Today, Baluarte de San Gabriel serves as a tranquil green space where visitors can stroll along the walls, enjoy views of the Pasig River, and experience a tangible link to the rich history of the Walled City.

Renowned as a powerful intercessor and miracle worker, San Antonio drew countless devotees who gathered for novenas and prayers, especially in the days leading to his feast.

The devotion reached great prominence in Manila, becoming one of the most enduring Franciscan traditions in the Walled City. Although the original church and image were destroyed during the Second World War, devotion to San Antonio de Padua endured and was later transferred to the chapel of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis in Sampaloc, where a faithful replica of the image continues to be venerated today.

Today, 13 June, we celebrate the Feast of San Antonio de Padua, honoring a saint whose legacy of faith, hope, and devotion continues to inspire generations of the faithful.
