In the 17th century, secretly shaving a sliver of silver from a coin was a crime so serious it could lead to ex*****on.

This practice, known as "coin clipping," was rampant. Since coins were hammered and slightly irregular, it was easy for someone to clip off a small piece of precious metal and pass the lighter coin off at its full value.

When enough people did this, the currency in circulation became devalued, threatening the stability of the entire English economy.

The government needed a solution, and the man tasked with overseeing it was none other than Sir Isaac Newton, who served as Warden of The Royal Mint. 🪙

Under his watch, England began The Great Recoinage of 1696. All the old, hammered coins were recalled and melted down.

In their place, the mint issued new, perfectly round coins made with a machine press. More importantly, these coins had a new feature: reeded edges.

Those little ridges on the side made it impossible to clip a coin without it being immediately obvious. The simple design innovation effectively ended the widespread crime.

When the United States established its own mint, it adopted this same practice for its silver coins, like dimes and quarters, to protect their value.

Today, the ridges are mostly a tradition, but they also help people distinguish between different coins by feel alone. That tiny detail on your change is a direct link to a time when it was a cutting-edge security feature. ⚖️
