A mother’s kids are her heartbeat.

If she sees him happy, her heart flutters. And then, when he gets excited, runs, and screams with delight, her heartbeat increases with his joy.

Because her kids are her heartbeat.

If she sees him with a tightening of his throat and a stuttering breath,
if she sees the gut-wrenching sobs about to tear through her chest,
if she walks into the room to tears racing down his cheeks,
she feels a heavy-achy-feeling as her heart drops to the pit of her stomach,
because she’s sad, too.

Because her kids are her heartbeat.

A mother feels her children’s pain more deeply than they do.

She’s their sturdy, but she breaks when they do.

Because her children’s hearts mean more than hers, so when it breaks, hers dissolves into nothingness.

Because she feels every bump in their road.

She’ll lay down next to them when they’re kicked to the ground, holding their hand.

And she’ll be there to remind them that life is worth getting up again. It’s part of healing.

If she could reach into their bodies and yank the pain away, giving it to herself--she would.

She’s already feeling it anyway,
because to her, there’s nothing more painful than seeing her children’s hopes crushed.

But when her children are happy and smiling, there’s no feeling like it for her.

A mother’s love can’t help it.
She’s forever entangled into the lives of these people she created.

Because her kids are her heartbeat.
