Last February 28, Carolinian and Josenian scholars under the Department of Science and Technology embarked on a one-day journey of leadership formation, deepening their understanding of what it means to be exemplary leaders grounded in professional excellence, social responsibility, and servant leadership.

Plenary sessions were delivered by distinguished alumni of the Scholars Leadership Camp from University of San Carlos and University of San Jose–Recoletos.

These were complemented by hands-on application activities and reflective debriefing sessions, allowing scholars to translate leadership principles into meaningful practice and personal commitment.

Last February 28, 2026, green and gold came together for their joint 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, facilitated by Scholars Leadership Camp (SLC) alumni from the University of San Carlos and University of San Jose–Recoletos.

The training opened with welcoming remarks from DOST SA USJ-R President Mr. Bryan Ypanto Rabor, setting the tone for a day dedicated to developing leaders grounded in purpose and passion.

𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲

The first plenary, led by Mr. Nathanael Owen Aguas, emphasized volunteerism and social awareness, challenging scholars to extend their excellence beyond academics and into meaningful service.

This was followed by 𝘛𝘶𝘨𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘢 𝘉𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯 – 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴’ 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, facilitated by Ms. Athessa Louise Reble and Mr. John Mark Antipuesto, where scholars examined pressing societal issues such as the literacy crisis, voter education, brain drain, solid waste crisis, and gentrification. Through a carousel discussion, scholars reflected on their role in contributing to solutions within their own capacities.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

The second plenary, facilitated by Mr. Adryan Gabriel Correa and Mr. Mel Benedict Guarde, focused on self-awareness and intentional growth as the foundation of professional excellence.

In the succeeding activity, 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧, led by Mr. Neil Brendan Delgado and Mr. Jan Henri Culanag, scholars navigated uncertainty by spelling words using letters placed on their bodies. What began as confusion gradually transformed into coordination, trust, and deeper awareness of one’s role within the team.

𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

The final plenary, led by Ms. Athena Oriel Bitara, highlighted empathy, presence, and genuine connection as the heart of servant leadership. This was reinforced through 𝘓𝘢𝘨𝘪’𝘵 𝘓𝘢𝘨𝘪 𝘒𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯, led by Ms. Shanice Laurico, where scholars worked together to overcome obstacles guided by only one pair of eyes at a time all the while carrying and protecting their additional team member, the egg they nurtured throughout the day, amidst the challenges, demonstrating unity, trust, and shared leadership.

The activity hall soon echoed with the scholars' empowering chants as they approach the end of the training.

The training culminated in the 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳 challenge, led by DOST SA USC President Mr. Jan Henri Culanag, where scholars built structures from limited materials while navigating constraints and uncertainty, putting into practice the lessons they had learned.

In the process, they realized that leadership is not defined solely by achieving goals, but by the values, attitude, and character cultivated along the way.

As the light of the setting sun refracted through the windows of the Lawrence Bunzel Building Room 264-265, so do the scholars who closed the day with the mindset that even the grandest of leaders must bow down in humble service to the Nation and its people.
