[2026 SRCSS Captured Moments]

The UP Cebu Statistics Program successfully held the 2nd Student Research Colloquium on the Statistical Sciences last May 28, 2026, held at the Lawak Sinehan, UP Cebu Lahug Campus, and it was nothing short of amazing.

With the theme "Shaping the Future through Statistical Insights," the event brought together bright young researchers from two institutions. The BS Statistics senior students from UP Cebu, together with the BS Statistics and BS Biology students from the College of Arts and Sciences of Cebu Technological University, proved that statistics is so much more than numbersβ€”it's about real stories, real solutions, and real impact.

A huge shoutout to all the student presenters for their hard work, courage, and brilliant insightsβ€”you've shown that the future of statistical science is not only bright but also fun. Special thanks as well to the faculty organizers, judges, and supporters from both UP Cebu and CTU for making this cross-university collaboration truly unforgettable.

Leading the Way in Extreme Value Research!

We extend our warmest congratulations to Asst. Prof. Jacque Bon-Isaac C. Aboy of the UP Cebu Statistics Program for being the Lead Author of a newly published article in Springer’s prestigious Natural Hazards journal!

Title: Nonstationary Generalized Extreme Value Modeling of Extreme Wind Speed Events with Seasonality and Time-Varying Variability

Published: 21 May 2026
DOI: 10.1007/s11069-026-08193-8

In this noteworthy contribution, Asst. Prof. Aboy and his co-authors propose a sophisticated nonstationary GEV model to capture extreme wind speed events, addressing seasonality and time-evolving variability, offering critical insights for the design of resilient offshore wind farms in coastal regions such as Kagoshima, Japan.

Study Highlights:

β˜‘οΈ Employed wavelet power spectrum and MODWT to diagnose nonstationarity across multiple temporal scales
β˜‘οΈ Developed a GEV model with sinusoidal covariates (location) and an exponential covariate (scale)
β˜‘οΈ Achieved superior goodness-of-fit and accuracy (AIC & RMSE) compared to stationary alternatives
β˜‘οΈ Identified southern Kagoshima, particularly Kasan, as highly vulnerable to extreme winds
