At a time in NZ when te reo Māori has been thrust into the spotlight of national discussion, I have been absolutely blessed with the opportunity to work on back to back projects that are communicating a Māori world view. Those that know me (Chris) know that I am about as white as they come, and am limited in my knowledge of this space, but I have somehow found myself as a fly on the wall during some incredible musical and historical discussions while working under the guidance of Oceans Before Me All of the artists, rangatira and organisers involved have been tremendously warm and open with me through the process and I have been humbled by the experience and have grown in my understanding as a result.

This song is inspired by the events that took place at Rangiaowhia on Sunday 21 February 1864. This landmark is just around the corner from where I live in Te Awamutu and I had no comprehension of the story surrounding it until I became involved with this project. This music video has been an amazing collaborative effort. We have been extremely privileged to work with the inspirational people at Oceans Before Me who are a driving force in elevating indigenous narratives through music and education. In this case they are launching a ten song album inspired by the atrocity that occurred in 1864 at Rangioawhia in Te Awamutu.

This first song is named APAKURA, and is named for the Iwi that resided in Rangioawhia at the time of the attack.

It is a celebration of their resilience and call to those who were forced to move away to return and be welcomed.
