Shore Rovers Netball Club Inc. is the oldest and largest club on Auckland’s North Shore, est 1953. She is also our Club Patron. Fascinating!

CLUB HISTORY

Shore Rovers Netball Club is the oldest club on the North Shore originally playing under the name of “El-Jay” for 1 season before changing its name to Shore Rovers Netball Club. At that time (1952) there was no North Harbour competition, the girls had to cross the bridge to play in Auckland. When netball competition started on the Shore, the Shore Rovers team moved from Auckland to help establish the competition, this was in 1953. The Club started with just one team and has grown to the current day with on average 14 teams per season, making it the oldest and one of the largest Clubs on the shore. A member of that original team, Fay Chapman, still comes down to the courts on a Saturday to watch our teams play. The name El-Jay came because the founding ladies worked at El-Jay Foundation which was a fashion factory in Milford circa 1591/1952. When the boss found the girls playing basketball at lunchtime he had a chat to them about using some leftover material to make some uniforms... thats where the green and yellow came from. They changed the name to Shore Rovers the following year when they joined the brand new centre at North Harbour in 1953, this was due to people thinking they had to work at El-Jay to be able to play for them. Gus Fisher (the owner of El-Jay) was the New Zealand licensee for Christian Dior, which gave him the exclusive rights to manufacture and sell Christian Dior originals and Christian Dior prêt-à-porter in the New Zealand market. With the advent of the National Club Competition in the 80’s, only the top Club team in a region was able to challenge for a place in the National League. Shore Rovers sat in the shadow of Carmel for a number of years until the Club finally worked its way to the top and challenged and beat Carmel for its place in the league in 1989. In 1994 the Club was ranked 3rd and gained a very high profile within the media, both television and newsprint. In the period 1994 – 1995, Shore Rovers consistently achieved a top four placing and came 2nd in both 1996 & 1997. In 1998, the new Regional Franchise competition was formed. This tipped out all top players from Club teams throughout NZ to go into the Regional Franchised Teams. This effectively wiped out Shore Rovers Team 1 as Rovers were at that time the top team in NNH. From 1998 - 2003 the top Shore Rovers team was a Social Team of ex-Rep players who decided to step away from Regional competition and play only at Club level. This team has seen the Club proud by consistently being in the top three teams at Netball North Harbour. The Shore Rovers Team Red finally retired in 2006. Over the years we've had some great Premier coaches; Margaret Burgess, Yvonne Willering, Bella Panoho, Helene Wilson (Mystics coach 2017) and Ripeka Albert (Beko assistant coach 2017). Shore Rovers 1 won the Premier 1 competition in 2015 and 2013, after spending a few years getting back to the top and our 2nd team have spent the past few years in and out of premier 1. You can see more about our grade placings under the "club awards and recognition' page. The Club has been under the guidance of President, Kelly Cameron for the past 8 years. Kelly received her 20 year loyalty badge in 2016 and has held numerous roles such as Secretary, VP and Coaching Coordinator. The club is a very well run unit due to it's great committee and long service of members like Vice President Renee Fougere (10 yrs loyal) and Jan Nicholson (Life Member, 25 years loyal), Lynne Rosandich (Life Member, 18 yrs loyal) and current Secretary Rachel Stiff (10 yrs loyal).

🏆 The Cameron Trophy for Service to Netball 🏆

Andrea Cullen

The Cameron Trophy for Service to Netball regonises someone who gives their time and energy to make netball happen for others.

Andrea has been doing exactly that for around 35 years.

This season, she managed both Team 8 and Team 11. Over the years, she has coached, managed, scored, played, filled in and taken on whatever job needed doing.

As Andrea puts it, “Just give me a job.”

And we know we can count on her to get it done.

Thank you Andrea, for the hours you give and the care you bring to every team you support. A very deserving recipient!

🏆 Coach of the Year 🏆

Natalia Abbott

Natalia is the kind of coach who gives absolutely everything to her players. Her commitment is extraordinary, she has even changed flights to ensure she could be there for a game and this prize giving, and despite working incredibly demanding hours, she stepped up to coach not one, but two teams this season.

Natalia brought new skills, ideas and challenges to training every week, providing honest and constructive feedback while ensuring every player felt included and had the opportunity to succeed.

Her belief in her players helped Team 4 reach Premier 2 and finish third, an achievement many of them never imagined possible at the beginning of the season.

She also put her hand up to coach Team 8 and guided them through to finish third in their grade.

Natalia’s impact goes far beyond results.

The positive culture Natalia has created allows her players to rise above distractions, embrace the joy of the game and truly believe in themselves and one another.

She has helped them grow not only as netballers, but as people.

For her incredible dedication, selflessness and ability to bring out the very best in everyone around her, our Coach of the Year is Natalia Abbott.

🏆 Team of the Year 🏆

SR18 Development 3

Development 3 is a young team of ten committed players, most of whom were experiencing senior club netball for the first time this season.

Despite the demands of school, training and competing in the adult arena, they turned up every week with an amazing attitude and a genuine desire to learn.

The girls quickly gelled, developing wonderful friendships and a strong sense of team spirit that was reflected in the way they played.

Their teamwork, commitment and determination saw them reach the Senior 7 final, beating a team that had dropped down from Senior 6 to secure their place, and then go on to win their grade in their very first season!

They also won the Netball North Harbour Defensive Points Trophy for 40 min games which is huge!

Their contribution extended well beyond their own team. They stepped up time and time again to fill in for other Shore Rovers teams, always willing to help and never looking out of place on court.

Their coach describes them as an absolute pleasure to work with, and their growth in confidence, skill and maturity has been incredible to watch.

From a group of young players new to club netball to Senior 7 champions, Team 18 has shown exactly what can be achieved through commitment, friendship, hard work and playing for one another.

We are so excited to see where their netball journey takes them.

🏆 The Leadership Trophy 🏆

Maisy Longbottom 💚

Maisy leads by example, both on and off the court.

Her tenacity, determination and hunger to win are unmistakable, she never gives up, constantly rallies the troops and knows how to bring out the very best in her teammates.

Her heart and soul go into her team through her motivating talks, high standards and dedication to every training session.

From the defensive end, she can be heard encouraging and directing her teammates, staying completely locked into the game for the full 60 minutes.

Her famous line, “Never dip,” became Team 2’s motto and perfectly describes the way Maisy approaches her netball.

Through a challenging start to the season, she kept pushing, lifted the team’s spirits and stood up when they needed a leader most.

Her resilience and belief helped guide Team 2 all the way to a huge victory, taking out the Premier 2 title.

🏆 Future Prem 1 Player 🏆

Chanel Catchpole 💚

Chanel has become an absolute star Team 4.

She is agile, has a lethal jump and is an absolute nightmare for any opposing attacking end.

She never gives up and can always be relied upon to produce an intercept when her team needs it most.

What makes Chanel particularly exciting is that she is not content to rely solely on her natural athleticism.

She is eager to learn, takes feedback incredibly well and puts in the work outside of training to develop the her game.
