Shingle & Shell

This might not be the greatest wave anyone’s ever seen, but after the last few years, I’m just grateful to be back on any of my boards. Any session is a gift.

After many hours of carving, cutting, placing and pouring, this one is nearly ready for its forever home.

Featuring hand-carved storm clam shell, New Zealand pāua shell, mirror accents and a deep-cast resin finish, all set into an upcycled side table. The resin is now cured and glossy, and all that’s left is a few final paint touch-ups. Swipe to see original table.

I was originally planning to stencil “BEACHED AS” across the front in pāua blue, but now that I can see the finished top, I’m having second thoughts.

Do I leave the front clean and let the mosaic be the star? Or add something special?

A little business-to-business story that honestly could’ve gone very differently 👏🏼

I recently ordered my usual pink mussel shell pieces from Beachcomber NZ and, for the second time, was disappointed with the sizing for the type of work I use them for — carving.

After reaching out again, I wasn’t expecting much… but I was genuinely impressed by the response and the outcome. Instead of a defensive reply, they actually listened, understood the application I use the shells for, and offered to hand-grade a replacement batch better suited to carving.

That level of customer service and willingness to make things right deserves recognition. Mistakes happen in every business, t’s how they’re handled that matters.

So credit where credit is due: I absolutely still recommend this company to anyone looking for shell supplies. They’ve got a really cool product and customer service that actually feels human. 🤍🐚

So the time has come to let you all know that Shingle and Shell will be closing. It’s been such a fun ride, but there’s also been a LOT of challenges along the way.

I’ll be keeping the website open for the rest of this year while I participate in next summer markets and reduce remaining stock. There won’t be any restocks going forward. I’m already low on a few designs.

There are only 3 Destination necklaces left, plus a small handful of silver and gold Islands for those of you who love Waimarama. I still have a good amount of Moana and Huntress rings, which will be my focus for a few final summer markets.

Any artwork will be heading to galleries.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement and continued support over the journey — it has meant the world. I’ll be forever stoked that I have designed and get to keep my favourite ever keepsake jewellery pieces.
