Trash or Treasure?

Hemigraphis colorata, also known as Scarlet Leaf or Purple Waffle Plant, is often mistakenly sold as an aquatic plant. Hobbyists are drawn to its striking colours, only to be disappointed when it struggles and eventually declines when kept fully submerged underwater. As awareness has grown that it is not a true aquatic plant, Hemigraphis colorata has unfortunately gained a bit of a bad reputation.

Hemigraphis colorata is actually an excellent water-loving marginal plant. It thrives with its roots in water and leaves above the surface, making it perfect for growing on top of an aquarium, paludarium, or riparium setup.

Its vibrant purple foliage offers a colourful alternative to the usual pothos and peace lilies, adding a unique splash of colour to your aquarium display.

Next time you're looking for plants to grow out of your aquarium, don't overlook Hemigraphis colorata. Sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective."🌿🐟
