A Pirongia dairy farmer has nearly halved his herd's empty rate, from 18% down to around 10%, after changing his approach to mating. Fraser Hasnip says starting short-gestation semen earlier than usual, alongside closer attention to cow health before mating, has lifted his herd's reproductive performance.

In Ireland, while carrying out AB work on other farms, John Phelan noticed some herds using New Zealand genetics. Curious, he decided to try a small amount over his own herd.

“I saw a bull called Hugo in an LIC catalogue. He looked balanced, so I gave him a go.”

What began as a small trial on the Phelan family’s Irish dairy farm quickly grew. Jerseys, Norwegian Red and Friesian crosses followed, and when the first crossbred heifers calved, the difference was obvious.

“I remember looking at them and thinking, ‘Geez, I’ve missed a trick here.’ They were giving us everything we wanted.”

By the mid-2000s, John had committed fully to crossbreeding, replacing a large proportion of his herd with crossbred heifers.

Today we release our FY25/26 Annual Results, key numbers include revenue up 6.7% at $314.8 million and a Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) of $21.3 million. We have also announced a dividend payment of 12.26 cents per share representing 80% of Underlying Earnings.

These results support a strong demand for LIC’s products and services, including our on-farm software MINDA, where our integrations are increasingly supporting farmers to make more data-driven herd improvement decisions. In the past year alone more than 66% of our farmers have chosen to share data with one of our 17 integration partners and we have seen the number of animals connected through wearable integrations grow 93.8%

In the past 12 months the use of Sexed Semen has increased 52% and Genomic profiling is up 19%, allowing LIC’s reference population to now sit at more than two million genotypes. LIC Chief Executive David Chin says as a generational co-operative, LIC is proud of the role it plays in driving genetic gain both for farmers and the national herd.

“Achievements like this, alongside a strong financial result, reflect the confidence farmers have in our co-op. I want to take this opportunity to thank our farmers for their support of the co-op and also our teams for the hard work they put in every day. Results like this can only be achieved when we all work together, and we don’t that that support for granted.”
