The Wood’s Lamp: an underrated tool in skin analysis, let’s talk about it ⬇️

A Wood’s lamp is a diagnostic fluorescence tool - skin specialists from dermatology practices to aesthetic clinics, use it to:

• visualise sebaceous activity
• identify superficial pigmentation
• help distinguish between epidermal and dermal pigmentation

In medical settings, it can also assist in identifying certain bacterial and fungal skin infections 🧫

At Skin Ritual, we use a Wood’s lamp as part of our skin assessments to gather more information and build a clearer picture of your skin’s condition 🤍

Changing peoples lives through skincare 🤍

And now for the (crucial) nuance ⬇️

In a 2008 study, histological examination of skin treated with FOUR microneedling sessions, spaced one month apart, showed a 400% increase in collagen and elastin deposition - at six months AFTER the final treatment.

This kind of result is really exciting, and mirrors what we see in clinic when working with microneedling devices - but there are some key things to note here 🔑

• Number of sessions is important - we recommend 4-6 sessions in a course of microneedling. Results from microneedling are cumulative, and course is necessary to see positive outcomes.

• Spacing is important - with optimal treatment protocols, sessions are spaced about four weeks apart.

• Complete results take time to see - tissue remodelling continues for months after a microneedling treatment - which is why studies on microneedling efficacy take their data from around 6 months+ post-treatment.

• Microneedling relies upon your skin doing the work - which means outcomes can and do vary. Your age, your lifestyle, your genetics, your pre and post-treatment care, will all influence how well you respond to microneedling.

• The device matters, and the practitioner matters. A high quality device and a well trained practitioner will get a better outcome for your skin than lower quality counterparts on both fronts can achieve.

Overall - microneedling is a safe, effective, and generally very well-tolerated modality to increase collagen and elastin deposition in the skin. Choosing a reputable provider and looking after your skin health before/after/during, will ensure you get the most out of the treatment 🤍
