Boxfish Robotics
Boxfish Robotics designs and manufactures industry-leading, actively stabilised ROVs and HAUVs. In 2018, Boxfish Robotics introduced their Boxfish ROV.
Boxfish Robotics was founded in 2016 with an objective to set the standard of underwater vision technology. We design and manufacture AUVs ,ROVs, and underwater resident vehicles to connect users with deep sea environments. Created for filmmakers, scientists, researchers, engineers and explorers, our solutions uncover the underwater world like no other. Our co-founders Ben King and Craig Anderson
🔴 Hidden Below: The Great Lakes is taking audiences this time to the deepest point of Lake Superior below 400 meters. More than 55 kilometres offshore and under pressures over 40 times greater than at the surface, this rarely seen world was last explored by scientists in a submersible 41 years ago and now it’s being brought back into view though the lens of the Boxfish Luna.

Operating a hovering AUV close to the seabed delivers the image quality and repeatability scientists and inspectors need, but it also places the vehicle in the most challenging part of the environment. Infrastructure, natural relief, moorings, debris and biological structures can all become collision risks during low altitude surveys.
In our recent blog, we break down how the Boxfish AUV performs obstacle avoidance during low altitude surveys, illustrating how sensing and onboard autonomy allow the vehicle to adapt its path and altitude.
How Does Boxfish AUV Obstacle Avoidance Work Learn how Boxfish AUV obstacle avoidance works using DVL‑based awareness and stereo cameras, and why it is critical for safe, repeatable environmental surveys.

At Boxfish, we’re motivated by supporting research teams as they advance autonomous underwater systems for demanding real‑world conditions. The MOLA AUV developed by MBARI demonstrates how scientists can benefit from a field proven Boxfish hardware platform and use it to test, validate, and advance their own autonomy and perception algorithms in real‑world conditions.
🔴 Inspired Planet returns for another livestream dive as a part of their new documentary Hidden Below: The Great Lakes, piloting a cinema grade Boxfish Luna ROV near Bruce Power on Lake Huron, Canada!
Join live if the time works for you, otherwise, a recording will be available.
And the journey continues!
Production is now underway on Hidden Below: The Great Lakes, with the Boxfish Luna ROV in the hands of award-winning Canadian filmmakers at Inspired Planet Productions, supporting a fresh look into one of the most overlooked ecosystems on the planet.
From familiar wildlife to hidden species, this is about seeing what’s always been there, just out of view. Check out the teaser!

Interesting read on how expectations for underwater vehicles are evolving from the perspective of different manufacturers published by Marine Technology Reporter Magazine. It’s encouraging to see how the industry continues to push the boundaries of capability, precision, and usability.
At Boxfish Robotics, we’re excited to be part of this evolution by offering portable Boxfish AUV platforms capable of sub-millimetre imaging resolution and high-accuracy positioning, enabling researchers and operators to capture detailed data even in complex underwater environments.

Boxfish Robotics will participate in the Ocean Action Forum 2025 in Jeddah, KSA. The event focuses on advancing marine sustainability and innovation, aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, and brings together experts and decision-makers to explore practical solutions for ocean ocean health and resilience.
We will present autonomous platforms, the Boxfish AUV and Boxfish ARV-i, for coral reef monitoring, benthic survey, and photogrammetry, that offer high-resolution sub-millimetre geo-referenced imaging and enable continuous monitoring in marine environments.
We look forward to meeting with customers and partners to discuss inspection needs, digital twin applications, and regional collaboration opportunities. If attending, we welcome you to visit us in the exhibition area.

Boxfish Robotics’ resident docking solution and autonomous resident vehicle, ARV-i, took centre stage at Ocean Business 2025 earlier this year at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. Built for continuous subsea operations, ARV-i autonomously returns to its dock to recharge and upload data, eliminating the need for surface intervention and helping reduce the carbon footprint of ocean exploration. Thanks to Ocean Science & Technology for featuring our technology and helping spotlight the future of subsea autonomy.
