The Waitakere Cadet Unit was started in 1980 by an ex SAS Soldier (Maj Howie James). In 1994 the units name changed to the Waitakere City Cadet Unit (WaitCCU).
Waitakere Cadet Unit (WaitCU) is part of The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF)
WaitCu conducts military style youth development in line with the NZCF Mission,
To develop and enable self-disciplined, confident and responsible young New Zealanders. The unit paraded at the Te Atatu Primary School and was called the Te Atatu Cadet Unit. In that same year the unit moved to a building next to the BBQ Factory on Lincoln Road and paraded in the car park. On the 17th September of that year the unit had a recognition parade, which was attended by the Waitakere City Mayor. In 1996 the unit moved and paraded at 2 Sig’s Coy Hobsonville airbase. When the Hobsonville airfield began to close down in 2000, the unit moved and paraded at Henderson Intermediate School. In late 2012 WaitCCU moved to our present home, the Te Awaroa Scout Hall, Tui Glen Reserve and when the Auckland Super City was created the unit's name was changed to 'Waitakere Cadet Unit (WaitCU)'.

Waitakere Cadet Unit is the 2026 Northern Area Skill at Arms champion!
Huge congratulations to the team members who gave it their all over the weekend.
It was an excellent competition and we faced some strong teams. Well done to all who participated, and a big thanks to those who supported us.
Next stop, Nationals.

Over the weekend of the 27th -29th March, Waitakere Army Cadet Unit proudly hosted the Auckland Regional Basic Barrack Camp at the Jeff Magilsen Complex in Ardmore.
We had 60 personnel from across all five Auckland Army Cadet Units — WAITCU, CACU, NSCU, PAPCU, and TAMCU — come together for an outstanding weekend of foundational training and teamwork.
Cadets took part in a full programme covering drill, NZCF haka, Cadet Force knowledge, dress and bearing, and physical training. It was great to see the effort, discipline, and camaraderie on display across all units.
A big thank you to 4 Squadron for the use of the facilities, our incredible support committee for keeping everyone well fed, and the officers and staff who gave their time to deliver training and support the cadets throughout the weekend.
Well done to everyone involved — a strong effort and a great example of what the NZ Cadet Forces are all about.

I warmly invite you to attend the Waitakere Cadet Unit Committee Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 3rd March at Waitakere Cadet Unit.
The NZ Cadet Forces is a long-standing youth organisation dedicated to developing leadership, confidence, resilience and teamwork in young New Zealanders. It is a partnership between passionate volunteers, the New Zealand Defence Force, and our wider community, and offers cadets unforgettable opportunities and life skills far beyond the classroom.
What many people don’t realise is that every cadet unit must have a volunteer Unit Support Committee— made up of parents, caregivers and community members — in order to operate. These committees manage fundraising, handle unit finances, coordinate resources, assist with planning activities, and support the Unit Commander and staff so cadets can get the experiences they deserve. Without an active committee, a unit simply cannot continue.
Your involvement — whether you come along to listen, offer ideas, or stand for a role — makes a real difference. Committee members are essential to bringing cadet activities to life: everything from weekend camps, training events and equipment provision, to the smooth running of local programmes. Together we help ensure our cadets get the best possible experience in a safe, supportive, and enriching environment.
You don’t need any prior experience — just a willingness to help support the cadets. Everyone’s input is valued and contributes to the continued success of our unit.
