Our Fillies were in the thick of it today when the Auckland Storm hosted Waikato in a semi final of the Farah Palmer Cup at Eden Park. It was a hard fought and entertaining match and with 10 minutes to go the scores were locked up at 26 all. The teams then traded late tries but with Auckland having converted their effort they held sway 33-31 with a couple of minutes to go. The hosts worked their way down field and were hot on attack when they received a penalty as the ho**er went. It was converted and the Storm ran out 36-31 winners to advance to the final next week. The opposition will be either Canterbury or Manawatu who are to play the other semi in Christchurch.

It is with much sadness that we advise of the passing of Phil Gifford. The popular journalist, author and broadcaster was also the creator of Ponsonby Rugby 'stalwart' Loosehead Len in 1973. In his own words Phil described the birth of the character ‘Before I wrote a word of the first Loosehead column, I knew that Loosehead's wife's name was Lorna, that his second name was Lacey, that he drove a 1937 Chev, that he was expelled from primary school for punching the son of the first $10 English immigrant to New Zealand, that he worked in a foundry in Herne Bay before it closed down, that he was hazy about how many children he had, and that his oldest son, Cyril, was a hairdresser in Parnell, who moonlighted as a make-up artist for the Grammar club, which Loosehead sneeringly called Glamour’.
Loosehead Len appeared in the 8 o’clock for over 12 years until the publication closed down in 1985.
Phil, who was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2024, contributed to sports journalism for over 50 years and died on Tuesday at the age of 79
He is survived by wife Jan and three children.
