University rugby club was established in 1888. The following was written by Sir Colin Maiden in 2006-07 and provides an insight into the development of sporting facilities at Auckland University. Maiden was Vice-chancellor of Auckland University from 1971 to 1994. The playing fields at Merton Road (previously known as University Park) were renamed Colin Maiden Park in 1994 in recognition of Sir Co

Hand’s up for Round 5 🙌🏼

Our Gsity ladies play their first Varsity home game this year! They take on to hopefully break the 4 way deadlock at the top of the Women’s PD table.

The Premiers and Prem Development take on East Tamaki rugby at home this weekend. We field our own super sibling duo this weekend in the form of Pat and Miracle Vaovasa, playing lock and wing respectively for the Premiers.

U21 look to bounce back into the winners circle this week as they go east to take on .

Good luck for the weekend all teams! See you all out there.

Some of you may have seen him around the club already, but this week Bill Coman has started as our new Game Development Officer.

With both his father and uncle playing for AURFC in the 80s, Bill was born and bred in Auckland (attending Kings College) and has spent the last few years at the University of Canterbury studying law.

On the field, Bill was a lock for the University of Canterbury Premiers and was a part of three NZU tours. After retiring from playing in 2022, Bill moved into rugby coaching and administration for his club’s Colts program.

He’s quickly making himself known around CMP, and tells us he’s most looking forward to being a part of the renowned AURFC culture, along with hopefully raising a Gallaher shield in the process.

Welcome mate!

This weekends fixtures 🐍. Plenty of action both home and away as we move into round 5. Make sure you get out and support all our varsity sides.

As some of you may know, Saua Leaupepe (Game Development Officer), has finished up at AURFC this week after more than two and a half years with the club.

Coming in initially in 2021 with a focus on community engagement, his impact was immediately felt as he strengthened ties to our local schools and his work cumulated in some of the most senior numbers we have seen in many years – including two under 21 teams in 2023.

As Saua made his mark on the rugby, it came quickly apparent his passion for content and social media was also going to be a huge asset. It goes without saying that his impact on this aspect of the club has been immense too, with us proudly being able to hero some of the slickest community rugby content in New Zealand.

Saua moved into his current Game Development role around this time last year, and helped lead our rugby programme to a Gallaher Shield final, and AURFC to Club of the Year at the NZ Rugby awards.

With the ‘changing of the guard’ in terms of other staff near the end of 2023, Saua admirably stepped in to wear multiple hats within the club – from barman, general manager, and prop. Something we will always be indebted for.

Thank you for all your passion over the years mate, and we’ll see you on side-lines soon.

Dave Hutchens
Chairman AURFC

Our trio!

It’s great to have some overseas linkups down under at the club this year.

Jac Pollitt (left), Charlie Balfour (centre) and Will Windows (right) all hail from Clifton College in Bristol.

Charlie is a referee for who is coaching our Premier Development team this year, while Jac and Will are playing for our U21 team.

Welcome lads!

Support for Rachel Hurcombe and her family 29/04/2024

It’s absolutely heart breaking to acknowledge the passing of Beachlands Maraetai Rugby Club player Cory Heather.

Following an accident in Saturday’s game at Te Puru Park, Cory sadly passed away on Sunday evening. Cory leaves behind his partner and three children, as well as his wider family, friends, team and club mates.

If you are willing and able to support, a Givealittle has been setup to support his family at this time.

Aroha nui

Now we work 🐍🤝🏾

Today we remember all those who have served past and present, particularly on the shores of Gallipoli all those years ago.

We had 3 All Blacks from the club answer the call to WWI in the form of William ‘Mac’ Geddes (left), Frank Wilson (centre) and John Victor Macky (right).

Frank represented the All Blacks in 1910 and captained the first title winning University team in 1914.

Sadly, he did not return home from the war.

John and William became All Blacks in 1913.

John famously scored 4 tries in a heroic Ranfurly Shield performance against Wellington in 1914.

William played in 4 Ranfurly matches, as well as being part of the Auckland side that beat Australia in 1913.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them”
