Westpac Scam on Facebook
The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz
For those who have a Facebook account, be aware that a Facebook complaints page has been set up pretending to be Westpac NZ.
These pages may offer refunds or compensation and ask for personal, banking, or card details. Don't be fooled. It's not common for businesses to set up pages for complaints on Facebook - they are usually scams.
Banks will never ask for your online banking password or PIN. That is for you to type on an official website or entered over phone banking.
✅ Be suspicious of Facebook "complaints" pages
✅ Never share banking or card details
✅ If in doubt, find the official bank number and call to ask.
If you think you've been targeted by a scam, contact your bank immediately. The sooner it's reported, the better the chance of preventing or recovering any loss.
This week is Netsafety Week so Neighbourly has also shared some further tips to keep safe online.....
😮💨 Pause before acting: Scams rely on creating fake urgency or panic. Stop and take a moment before clicking, paying, or responding.
✅ Check and verify: Never click embedded links, open unknown attachments, scan QR codes, or use contact details provided in suspicious communications. Hover over email addresses to check for domain typos, and verify claims by independently contacting organizations via their official website or public phone number.
📞 Stop and disengage: Immediately hang up on unsolicited callers, refusing to answer prompt questions, press keypad numbers, or grant remote access to your devices.
📲 Report and block: Report suspicious emails as spam/phishing before deleting them, forward scam texts to 7726 or mark as junk, and block unwanted senders on your phone.
✉ Secure physical mail: Shred letters containing personal details before disposal, and confirm physical correspondence directly with the sender online or by phone.
⚠ Take fast recovery steps: If compromised, contact your bank’s fraud department immediately to freeze accounts, update affected passwords to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and lodge a report with CERT NZ, Netsafe, or the NZ Police (105).
Netsafe have some great resources and you can find information on the various types of scams here.
Stay safe out there! Feel free to drop any of your own favourite tips or helpful resources in the comments below.
