French Fun Club Week 3 | Family 👨👩👧👦🇫🇷 | French for Kids in East Auckland
Another joyful Sunday at Botany Library! 💙🤍❤️
This week, children joined Chanson Languages Studio for Week 3 of our French Fun Club, exploring the theme “La famille” (Family) through French vocabulary, songs and interactive games.
One of the highlights was our “Who is missing?” game with our little puppet friends! 🧸 The children had so much fun trying to remember who was missing while practising French vocabulary — lots of laughter, excitement and French along the way! 😄🇫🇷
It was wonderful to see the children becoming more confident using French in such a fun and relaxed environment.
A big thank you to Botany Library for partnering with Chanson Languages Studio to bring this free community French programme to local families. 💙🤍❤️
We’re proud to create opportunities for children to experience French language and culture beyond the classroom, and to support French learning and community engagement across East Auckland and Auckland.
See you next week for our final session — Fruits! 🍎🍊🍌🍑🍇

🇫🇷 French Fun Club at Botany Library– Colours, Culture & Smiles 🎨
✨ Another fantastic Sunday at Botany Library! Our second French Fun Club welcomed children and families from East Auckland for a joyful morning of French, creativity and cultural discovery.
🎨 This week's theme was Les couleurs (Colours). Through games, songs and hands-on activities, children learned to recognise and confidently say colours in French while having lots of fun.
🗼 Our young learners also travelled to Paris without leaving Auckland! They explored the Eiffel Tower, discovered French culture and enjoyed authentic French videos together.
🖍️ Every child added another page to their French Fun Club Passport, colouring the Eiffel Tower and creating artwork featuring their favourite colour. By the end of the session, many children were confidently answering questions in French.
💛 One parent shared:
"My child absolutely loves French Fun Club and even teaches French words to her school friends. Monica makes learning feel like play, and I enjoyed learning French too!"
🙏 Thank you to Botany Library and all our wonderful families for another amazing Sunday.

🇫🇷 À bientôt! See you next Sunday! 💙🤍❤️
🎉 Our first French Fun Club at Botany Librarywas a hit! 🇫🇷✨
Last Sunday, we welcomed 20 children – over 30 people in total – and the room was full of laughter, songs, and proud little "bonjour"s!
We were so touched by the families who came by even though we were full – some watched from outside and signed up for our waiting list on the spot. That meant so much to us.
And the messages afterwards? Made our week:
💛 "Yuliana spent the whole Monday singing the French song at school!"
💛 "Johnny said it was 'Perfect! Give me more!' – never seen him so excited!"
💛 "My son stayed engaged the whole hour and didn't want to leave!"
Huge thanks to Botany Library for making this free community programme possible – and to all the families who came along. You were wonderful!
We're counting down to this Sunday – next theme: Colours! 🎨

Today's French 🇫🇷
"Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?"
(What are you doing?)
"Je joue au golf."
(I'm playing golf.)
Mum asked. He answered in French.
Apparently, Mum only understands French. 😌
The pattern:
Je joue au + team sport (masculine) = I'm playing + team sport
⚽ Je joue au foot. (football)
🎾 Je joue au tennis. (tennis)
🏀 Je joue au basket. (basketball)
What sport do you play? Tell us in the comments! 👇
🍦 A little French moment at home 🇫🇷
When my son asked for ice cream in English…
“Mum, can I have an ice cream, please?”
I decided to pretend I didn’t understand English… 😄
After a little thinking, he switched to French:
🇫🇷 Je veux une glace, s'il te plaît.
And suddenly… Mum understood! 🍦😂
Of course, the magic wasn’t the language itself — it was the joy of using the second foreign language in a real-life situation.
Learning French doesn’t have to start with complicated grammar.
Sometimes, it starts with a simple sentence a child actually wants to say.
✨ Je veux… = I want…
✨ S’il te plaît = Please
Small phrases. Real conversations. Confident little French speakers.
If My Child Learns French for a Year, What Will They Be Able to Say?
One of the questions parents ask us most often is: “If my child learns French for a year, what will they actually be able to say?"
There isn't a single answer. Every child learns at a different pace, and language learning develops gradually over time. Rather than trying to describe that journey, we'd like to share a real classroom moment from the beginning of it.
The video below was recorded during Lesson 9 of our beginner French class at Cockle Bay School. It is not an exam, a performance or a rehearsed presentation. It is simply a normal classroom activity, showing what our students were able to do at this stage of their learning.
For most of these children, this was their first experience learning French. By Lesson 9, they were already greeting one another, asking simple questions and responding in French during classroom activities. The conversations are still short, and the language is still simple—as you would expect from complete beginners.
What matters most is that they are already using the French they have learned. They are not waiting until they know "enough" French before speaking. They are learning to communicate from the very beginning.
This is only one small snapshot of a much longer journey. As students continue learning throughout the year, these simple conversations gradually become longer, richer and more natural.
Every confident French speaker starts somewhere. For these children, this classroom moment is one of those important first steps.
