“It’s only a small rust bubble…”
We hear this one a lot, and we completely understand why.
From the outside, rust might look like a tiny bubble in the paint, a small blister, or a spot only the size of a coin.
But unfortunately, what you can see isn't always what is happening underneath.
Rust often develops behind the surface first. Moisture can become trapped between seams, behind panels, underneath sealants or around areas where paint and protective coatings have broken down.
By the time the paint starts bubbling, corrosion may already have spread further beneath it.
That’s why we can't simply sand the bubble off, put some filler over it and repaint it.
A proper rust repair can involve:
🔸 Removing trims, fittings or other components to gain access
🔸 Removing paint and previous repairs to expose the affected area
🔸 Cutting the corrosion back until we reach sound metal
🔸 Fabricating a replacement section where required
🔸 Welding the new steel into place
🔸 Grinding and finishing the repair
🔸 Applying appropriate corrosion protection
🔸 Preparing and refinishing the area
🔸 Reassembling everything that was removed
Sometimes that tiny bubble really is a small repair.
Other times, we start exposing the area and discover something much larger hiding underneath.
The important thing is that we don't know how big a rust repair is based purely on the size of the bubble you can see.
When your rust repairer says, We won't know the full extent until we open it up,” they're not necessarily avoiding giving you an answer.
So yes, it might only look like a small rust bubble…but with rust, it's what you can't see that often matters most.

Nothing makes us happier than handing a vehicle back to its owner looking like it should again.
From organising the repairs and keeping our customer mobile with a courtesy car, through to the final clean and handover, we try to make what can be a stressful situation as straightforward as possible.
Thank you so much, for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback and for trusting our team with your vehicle.
We really appreciate the support! 😊

WHAT ACTUALLY GOES INTO A RUST REPAIR?
From the outside, rust repair can look pretty straightforward.
Find the rust. Cut it out. Weld some new steel in. Paint it.
Done… right?
Not quite.
The reality is that a proper corrosion repair can involve a surprising amount of work, and much of the most important work is completely invisible once the vehicle is finished.
FIRST, WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT WE'RE ACTUALLY DEALING WITH.
The rust you can see from the outside doesn't necessarily tell us what's happening underneath.
Paint, seam sealer, underseal, trims, glass and even overlapping panels can hide corrosion.
Sometimes components need to be removed and coatings stripped back before we can establish where the corrosion actually ends.
THEN THE AFFECTED STEEL HAS TO GO.
Corroded steel isn't simply covered over.
The affected section needs to be cut back until we're working with sound metal.
And sometimes what looked like a small area from the outside becomes considerably larger once it's opened up.
NOW WE HAVE TO PUT BACK WHAT WE REMOVED.
This is where a lot of the skill — and time — goes.
For many rust repairs, there isn't a replacement section available to simply order and fit.
So we make one.
Starting with sheet steel, we may need to recreate the shape of the original panel by cutting, folding, shrinking, stretching and forming the metal to reproduce curves, flanges, edges and contours.
Sometimes that's a relatively simple patch.
Other times it's anything but.
THEN IT HAS TO BECOME PART OF THE VEHICLE AGAIN.
The fabricated section is fitted, adjusted and welded into place before the welds are carefully finished and the area prepared for refinishing.
But we're still not finished.
WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE REPAIR MATTERS TOO.
Primers, seam sealers, cavity waxes and other corrosion-protection products may be required to protect areas that you may never see again once the vehicle is reassembled.
Then comes the refinishing process — preparation, texture where required, paint, reassembly and final finishing.
By the time you collect your vehicle, ideally you shouldn't be able to tell we've been there.
And that's the funny thing about good rust repair.
A huge amount of work can go into creating a finished result where there's almost nothing left to see.
So when you look at a completed rust repair, you're not just looking at a piece of steel and some paint.
You're looking at diagnosis, dismantling, fabrication, welding, metal finishing, corrosion protection, refinishing, experience and a lot of hours that have disappeared underneath the finished result.
At Peninsula Rust & Panel Repairs, rust and corrosion repair isn't something we occasionally come across.
It's a huge part of what we do.

RUST REPAIR VS PANEL BEATING — AREN'T THEY THE SAME THING?
They're closely related, but they're not quite the same thing.
Traditional panel beating is largely about restoring a vehicle after damage, repairing or replacing damaged panels, correcting dents and alignment, preparing surfaces and returning the vehicle to its pre-accident condition.
Corrosion repair brings a different set of challenges.
With rust, the damage hasn't happened in one moment.
It's often been developing quietly for years.
It can travel between overlapping panels, underneath seam sealer, around windscreens, inside pillars, through floor sections and into areas you simply can't see from the outside.
That means before we can repair anything, we first have to establish where the corrosion actually ends.
And that's where rust repair can become much more involved than it initially appears.
A proper corrosion repair may require:
• Removing surrounding components to gain access
• Stripping coatings and seam sealer to expose the affected area
• Cutting the corrosion back until sound steel is reached
• Working out how the original section was constructed
• Fabricating replacement sections - often from flat sheet steel
• Recreating folds, curves, flanges and mounting points by hand
• Welding the new steel into the vehicle
• Finishing and refinishing the repair
• Protecting the back of the repair, seams and cavities from future corrosion
In many cases, there isn't a replacement panel sitting on a shelf waiting to be fitted.
We actually have to make it.
And unlike collision damage, rust doesn't always show us the full extent of the job before we begin.
That's why corrosion repair requires a lot of judgement, fabrication skill and experience, particularly knowing what you're looking at once an area is opened up.
Panel beating is our trade.
Rust and corrosion repair is our specialty.
So when you bring us a rusty windscreen surround, sill, floor, roof, pillar or that suspicious little bubble that's appeared in the paint…
We're not just looking at the rust you can see.
We're thinking about what's happening underneath it.

A minor repair… on a not-so-minor vehicle! 😂
This BIG Iveco rolled into the workshop for a small repair and tidy-up.
Safe to say, it took up a little more room than our usual visitors! 😅
No job too small… apparently no vehicle too big either. 👌

There’s nothing better than seeing familiar faces come back through our doors.
Andy has trusted us with several of his vehicles over the years, and that continued support means a lot to our small business.
Thanks Andy for the kind words, the trust, and for choosing us time and time again. We really appreciate it!

A little old-school revival for this 1979 Furnware 470.
There’s something pretty cool about watching an older vehicle transform through the paint process, especially when you get to keep all the character that makes it what it is.
From tired and weathered to fresh, clean and ready for her next chapter.
Not bad for a 1979 model!

Toyota GT86 ✨
This GT86 came in for a bit of a tidy up, finished off with a cut and polish to bring the black paintwork back to life.
And that shine… 👌
Black is unforgiving, but when it’s looking right, it’s hard to beat.
A few finishing touches can make a huge difference to the overall appearance of a vehicle and this one left looking seriously sharp.
Tidy. Glossy. Ready to go. 🖤

WHY CAN TWO RUST REPAIR ESTIMATES BE SO DIFFERENT?
This is something we think customers deserve to understand.
We regularly hear:
"I've had another quote / estimate and it's much cheaper."
And that's completely okay, we always encourage customers to make the decision that's right for them.
But when it comes to automotive corrosion repair, two prices don't necessarily represent the same repair.
Rust repair isn't simply grinding away the bit you can see, filling it and painting over it.
What you see on the outside can be only a small indication of what's happening underneath.
A proper corrosion repair can involve:
- Removing trims, glass, panels or other components to gain access
- Removing coatings and seam sealer to establish the true extent of corrosion
- Cutting affected steel back until sound metal is reached
- Fabricating replacement sections often by hand
- Welding those sections into the vehicle
- Grinding, finishing and preparing the repaired area
- Applying appropriate corrosion protection to areas that may never be visible again
- Refinishing and reassembling the vehicle
And here's the difficult part:
We often don't know exactly how far corrosion extends until we start opening the area up.
A small bubble on the outside can reveal a significantly larger area underneath.
That is why comparing rust repair estimates purely by the number at the bottom can be misleading.
If one estimate is $1,500 and another is $3,000, it doesn't automatically mean one workshop is "expensive" and the other is "cheap".
Nor does it automatically mean that one repair is right and the other is wrong. Different repairers may approach the same job differently, and there can be perfectly legitimate reasons for that.
The important question is:
- Are they actually quoting the same repair process?
- Ask what is being removed.
- Ask how far the corrosion will be cut back.
- Ask whether replacement steel needs to be fabricated.
- Ask how inaccessible areas will be treated and protected afterwards.
- Ask what happens if additional corrosion is uncovered once the repair begins.
Because ultimately, you're not just paying for a piece of steel and some paint.
You're paying for someone's time, experience, judgement, fabrication ability and trade skill.
Corrosion repair is one of those areas of our trade where a huge amount of the work disappears once the vehicle is finished.
When we've done our job properly, you often can't see what we've done at all.
And perhaps that's why it's so easy to underestimate what goes into it.
At Peninsula Rust & Panel Repairs, rust and corrosion repair is largely what we do. We've seen first-hand how something that looks minor from the outside can become something very different once it's opened up.
We will never claim to be the cheapest option.
Our estimates are based on the labour and repair process we believe the vehicle actually requires.
We think skilled trades should be valued and we think customers deserve to understand exactly what they're actually paying for.
So next time you're comparing rust repair estimates, don't be afraid to ask:
"What exactly does this price include?"
That question can be far more important than the price itself.
We hope this information helps and raises some awareness with the challenges that come with the complexity of corrosion / rust.
