Just under 2 years on from facilitating the "Imagining Te Oneroa ō Kahu Long Bay Workshop Series" it was great to see the amazing progress locals have made through the Long Bay Residents Assoc, culminating in Sunday's community planting day at Awa Rua Ika Vaughan Stream.

1800 native plants including kahikatea, tōtara and tī kōuka were infill planted into existing stream side vegetation to stabilise erosion and provide habitat for birdlife and instream native species including inanga whitebait.

Trash Free Taiaotea also diverted 17.1kg of waste from landfill from the event 🌱♻🌱♻🌱

Enjoyed attending the 2026 Tāmaki Makaurau Zero Waste Awards, and the recognition of a couple of our partners - Ōrewa College Enviro Group, who won the "Rangatahi Leadership Award", a school we have worked with in 2026 delivering the Zero Waste Zero Carbon schools programme, and "Growing the Movement Award" winner Estella Lee from the Chinese Conservation Education Trust, who worked with us delivering chinese language workshops to promote Auckland Council's Rukenga Kai Food Scraps service.

We were stoked to partner with East Coast Bays Library for the "Tupuānuku: Broad Beans" event on Tuesday, July 14. Forty tamariki joined our session with Judith and Chrissy celebrating Tupuānuku—the Matariki star linked to food that grows in the ground—by focusing on planting and growing broad beans using containers made from reused newspaper.
