Have we spent too long arguing about concrete vs timber?

In this clip from Building Pulse, Tim Haycock challenges one of the biggest conversations in the construction industry.

Instead of treating materials as competitors, should we be asking how they work together to create better buildings?

It's a discussion that goes beyond embodied carbon and gets to the heart of what architects, engineers, builders and developers are actually trying to achieve.

And keep an eye out for Part 2, releasing 17 June, where we move from the technical discussion into practical opportunities for builders, architects and developers.

Germany started using slag cement in the 1870s.

That's more than 150 years ago.

In this clip from Building Pulse, Tim Kleier from Concrete NZ explains why some of the low-carbon concrete conversations happening in New Zealand today aren't actually new at all - other parts of the world have been refining these approaches for generations.

It's a fascinating discussion about supplementary cementitious materials, industry adoption, and what New Zealand can learn from overseas experience.

Is concrete really as energy-intensive as we've been led to believe?

In this clip from our latest Building Pulse episode, Tim Kleier from Concrete NZ challenges one of the industry's most common assumptions.

While cement carries most of concrete's carbon footprint, Tim explains why the bigger picture isn't always as simple as concrete vs timber - and why the way we compare materials matters.

Most flooring products are designed with one end in mind: landfill.

In this clip from our latest Building Pulse episode, Shaneel Deo explains how Milliken is challenging that model - designing products for reuse, longer life cycles and closed-loop recycling from the very beginning.

A fascinating look at how sustainability thinking is evolving beyond just “recycled content”.

“Worst construction market since the GFC.”

We’re hearing it everywhere.

But the data tells a different story.

Consents have dropped — yes.
But they’ve dropped back to… normal levels.

“We’ve come off a peak — not fallen into a hole.”

The disconnect right now?
It feels worse than it actually is.

If fuel gets restricted… who actually gets hit?

Not who you might think.

Essential industries will be protected — trucks, farming, supply chains.
But there’s a big group in the middle that could feel it fast.

“If restrictions come in… it’s not the work vehicles that wear it.”

Global events don’t stay global for long — they hit right here, quickly.
