PROGEAR SPOTLIGHT: Sigma dp2 Quattro

This is perhaps one of the weirdest cameras we’ve used. It’s also Aston’s favourite camera (he’s owned it three times).

With a low ISO tolerance, lack of viewfinder, and a quirky appearance, the Sigma dp2 Quattro is a camera for the esoteric. However, what you will get is an optically superb camera with an unparalleled sensor. Using a Foveon X3 Quattro sensor and incredible fixed lens, the files are like they were made in the world’s smallest medium-format camera.

If you are on the hunt for something unlike anything you have used before, then this is worth watching out for. This is a particular type of camera for a particular type of photographer (which is probably why Aston loves it so much).

PROGEAR SPOTLIGHT: Kodak Ektar H35 Half-Frame

Lightweight, affordable, and pure fun, this unit is the perfect place to start for those new to film or anyone wanting a new toy. You also get double the amount of exposures in each 35mm roll; the ultimate bang for your buck.

Using a battery only for the flash, the camera is otherwise fully mechanical with a set lens at f/8 and 1/100 shutter. While not a camera to use for high-art photography, this is ideal for festivals, gigs, or, in this case, a 60th birthday party.

This camera needs no introduction.

Medium format shooting is easier than ever, and made even easier by renting from us. We have the X2D II 100C and three lenses to choose from, so you can take this for a joyride anytime!

PROGEAR SPOTLIGHT: Fujifilm X-T5

Proving to be a heavyweight in the crop sensor realm, the Fujifilm X-T5 packs a 40MP punch, giving you full-frame resolution in a portable, lighter body. It’s a true all-rounder.

Despite the high resolution, the camera keeps the Fujifilm character and your images never end up feeling too clinical or detached. You get the famous “Fuji look” from a weather-sealed workhorse, giving you a tactile experience and rich, detailed images.

It’s a dependable camera worthy of your trust, and the images speak for themselves.

PROGEAR SPOTLIGHT: Zeiss Ikon Nettar II 517/16

Produced between 1951-57, the Zeiss Ikon Nettar II 517/16 is a charming medium-format camera with some old-school quirks.

While Nettar cameras were originally advertised for the amateur photographer, they share many parts with the more expensive Ikonta range and provide incredible sharpness and personality. Popping the lens in-and-out feels like a party trick, and allows the camera to be incredibly portable. This series is a great choice for anyone wanting the detail of medium-format without the hassle of a sizable kit.

The lack of visual aids for focusing adds a fun game of “guess-stimating”, and the absence of a light meter can be compensated for by a simple phone app (which was used for these images).

We currently have a similar camera, the Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta, in our secondhand cabinet. It has just been fully serviced, so check it out on our website or give us a call!
