Auckland bus driver Ashraf Almoukdad is urging tougher fare enforcement and stronger security on the city’s bus network after allegedly being punched by a passenger who refused to pay.
The 63-year-old told the The New Zealand Herald that driving a bus has become one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, with many drivers quietly living in fear of the passengers they encounter.
Police Inspector Dan Weir said officers were called to Massey Rd in Māngere around 8.30am on Wednesday after reports of an incident involving a Ritchies Transport driver near the Gull service station.
Initial inquiries suggest a female passenger boarded the bus without paying her fare before the situation escalated.
