Used vehicles & machinery imports – the small things that cause big delays
Used vehicles and machinery are some of the most common imports we see held up — not because they’re prohibited, but because of small details that get missed.
Typical issues:
Dirt, grease, leaves or plant matter still present
Undercarriage not properly cleaned
Engines or components showing oil residue
Missing or unclear cleaning certificates
Description says “cleaned” but the item clearly isn’t
Mismatch between paperwork and what’s physically in the container
MPI doesn’t look at intent — they look at risk.
Even one dirty forklift, tractor, or car can:
Trigger an inspection
Require re-cleaning
Add unexpected costs
Delay the whole container
How to avoid it:
Proper cleaning before shipping, not after arrival
Clear photos and honest descriptions
Don’t assume “it looks clean enough”
Allow time and budget for MPI checks, just in case
Most delays we see could have been avoided offshore.
If you’re importing used vehicles or machinery, planning early makes all the difference.

Why containers get held at the port (and how to avoid it)
Most containers don’t get held because of bad luck.
They get held because of small things that were missed earlier.
Common reasons we see:
Paperwork doesn’t match the cargo
(description, quantities, weights, HS codes)
Missing or late documents
(invoice, packing list, BL not released on time)
Biosecurity risk items not declared
(wood, used equipment, outdoor items, food traces)
Incorrect or unclear HS classification
→ Customs asks questions, entry gets stopped
MPI inspection required
(often normal, but delays happen if it’s not prepared for)
Port, depot, or shipping line charges not settled
(even when freight is “prepaid”)
How to avoid most of this:
Get documents checked before the vessel arrives
Declare properly — guessing causes more delays than honesty
Don’t assume “used goods” or “personal items” don’t matter
Talk to your broker early, not when the container is already on the wharf
Most delays are preventable with a bit of planning.
If you’re unsure, it’s always cheaper to ask first than fix it later.

Bringing personal effects into NZ – quick heads-up
If you’re shipping personal or household items into New Zealand (moving back, relocating, students, returning residents etc), most used personal effects can come in duty and GST free — but only if it’s done properly.
What Customs and MPI usually want:
Proof the goods are owned and used overseas
Passport / visa details
A basic packing list (doesn’t need to be fancy)
Biosecurity checks — NZ is strict, especially on outdoor items
Things that often cause delays:
Shoes, camping gear, tools, sports equipment
Wooden furniture or carvings
Food, plants, animal products
“It’s just personal stuff” with no paperwork
Most problems we see could have been avoided with a quick check before arrival.
If you’re unsure, ask early. It saves time, stress, and money.
Happy to help if needed.
