Studio Sio Interior Design

Storytime: Lauren and I first met in 2013, when she was about to have her first baby and posted an ad on Craigslist looking for someone to help with her interior design drafting. I was fairly new to NYC and perhaps a *little* naive (see: meeting strangers from Craigslist ads, which led to a few other good story times, if you want to hear them!). But that meeting at the OG Van Leeuwen’s in Cobble Hill turned into an incredible 13-year working relationship.

Since then, we’ve collaborated on countless residential projects under both Lauren Stern Design and Studio Sio. If you’ve worked with one of us, chances are you’ve worked with both. For larger hospitality projects that gets complicated, so we’ve made it official: one team, and a bit of a super band.

We sat down with the woman behind some of the most beautiful handmade rugs we've seen, and her story is the whole reason we wanted to share it.

We talk about her process - including how working with an interior designer shapes the final design.

The Greenhouse room at the Lobby Bar at Hotel Chelsea, a space that layers lattice, patterned tiles and drapery to create a warm, intimate atmosphere.

Each element adds another layer of interior design texture and pattern, giving the bar a sense of depth and character while nodding to the rich history of the hotel.

The collections of El Quijote: all saved from the original versions of the space, bringing together layers of ornamentation and collected pieces to create a space full of unique character.

It’s the accumulation of details that gives the room its sense of history, with each element adding to the story rather than standing alone.

Each fixture brings its own character to the room, adding a softer layer of atmosphere and drawing the eye to the details that make the space feel so considered.

Just returned home from eight days in NYC to kick start a new project, with a little bit of downtime in between!

Highlights included the Tarot exhibition at the Morgan, a million showrooms (including getting to finally see the amazing WRETCHED FLOWERS new spot - so worth a visit!), catching up with family and friends, hunting through antique and salvage yards in the pits of New Jersey, drinks at the very cool Obvio, and the new Printemps New York department store - holyyy, what a wonderland of tile and wallpaper and stone, an interiors wonderland.
