Grey Ridge Vineyard
Vineyard accommodation, wine tasting, platters, boutique wine sales and of course beautiful views!
Grey Ridge Vineyard - this page gives you short snippets about the latest adventure of Paul and Sue Keast, who gave up the corporate life to pursue their dreams of owning and working a vineyard in Central Otago, NZ. Who knew a few years ago that we would now be grappling with viticulture, cellar door tastings, "Vineyard Experience" accommodation and face to face marketing of delicious wine! We are

Minus 5 degrees this morning and the frosty leaves were amazing. All around us there is snow on the mountains.
Just a month ago there was a solitary dandelion still flowering. It obviously did not know that winter was coming.
While the rest of the country had heaps of rain we had snow that makes gives us 'postcard' scenery. Now is the time to visit (even if it's cold) as you will get a warm welcome at our Cellar Door and you can enjoy the views along with a glass of Pinot Noir.

After 10 years of pruning the anvil on my pruner's broke!
Fortunately a replacement anvil was available and in the meantime I borrowed one of the latest model Infaco pruners (the 3020) which was great.
The second photo is a shot of a brand new whetstone for sharpening the blades versus the one I have been using for 10 years. The old one looks like a propeller instead of like a brick.
Despite the old equipment our Pinot Noir wines are outstanding!
We currently have our 2020 and 2021 vintages available from our local Cellar Door, so drop in if you are nearby for a tasting.
We can also dispatch wine by courier as we are NOT available in the supermarkets.
Drop us a line at [email protected] if you are interested.

At the end of last week we completed half of the vineyard pruning, which was the quickest we have managed in 10 years. But (on the right) it looks like SOMEONE missed a couple of vines and some remedial work was required.
Whenever we find a slip-up like this, we blame "SOMEONE". This is usually one of us, but there is no shame attached - we then just get on and fix it.
In the meantime our Cellar Door is still open during the winter and we also have a winter special deal on to clear two vintages: Horizon Rosé 2024 and Gravity Pinot Noir 2020.

It's that time of year again. We are eight days into pruning and a quarter of the way through the vineyard, which means that we will finish around the end of July. Our Cellar Door is still open throughout the winter for tastings and platters. Best time is late afternoon as we are generally finished pruning by 3pm and it's generally warmer then.

Olive picking cancelled!
When the olives are hit by a hard frost they turn from plump and greenish to brown and shrivelled - and very quickly rancid.☹️. We have lost over half our usual crop so it’s not worth picking the volume that’s left - OH DEAR HOW SAD😆. First time in more than 10 years, but I’m not really sad as it’s one less job to do 🎉 However my frugal soul hurts a little to see unused fruit on the trees so
If anyone wants to come and pick them to mess around with them in your kitchen, you are very welcome 😆

What a difference a month makes!
Actually it was almost two months ago that we were in the middle of harvest - juicy grapes and blue sky. But last week we had days of frosty fog, resulting in interesting photos of icy dedicated grapes 😍
After a long and busy season with LOTS of lovely guests and busy vineyard work, we are coming down from the constant adrenaline 😵💫 and are just doing a few jobs here and there.
Looking forward to a quiet-ish winter ❤️
