Gurkha Encounters: Born from Setback, Built on Courage
Gurkha Encounters began with rejection and uncertainty. As an SLC graduate who briefly studied journalism, I struggled to find work in Kathmanduâs tourism industry. After missing a crucial job appointment with a reputable trekking company, I lost what felt like my biggest opportunity.
Instead of giving up, I asked myself a simple question: If I canât work for a trekking company, why not build one? Inspired by the courage and reputation of the Gurkhas, Gurkha Encounters was born with three partners, little capital, and strong determination.
Our values were truly tested during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. Business stopped being the priority. We gathered our tents, mattresses, and sleeping bags and air-dropped relief supplies to affected communities by military helicopter. I was ready to close the company if saving lives required itâbecause entrepreneurship without humanity has no meaning.
Today, Gurkha Encounters is more than an adventure travel company. It represents responsibility, service, and the spirit of the Gurkhasâbravery in adventure and compassion in crisis.

Gurkha Encounters: Born from Setback, Built on Courage
Before Gurkha Encounters became a respected name in luxury adventure travel across Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and India, its story began with uncertainty, rejection, and a young man searching for direction in Kathmandu.
Academically, I was only an SLC graduate, with a brief beginning in journalism studiesâwhat some would call a college dropout. But life has its own university. In Nepalâs tourism sector, if you can successfully build and run an adventure trekking company that aligns with and promotes the national tourism policy, your experience becomes your degree. The mountains become your professors. The trails become your classroom.
In those early days, I was desperately searching for work across Kathmandu. I was once interviewed by a British gentleman at Himalayan Encounter, a sister company of Encounter Overlandâone of the reputable destination management companies at the time. It felt like my big opportunity.
But fate tested me.
I failed to report to his office at 10 a.m. the next morning.
That single missed appointment cost me the job.
For many, that would have been the end of the road. For me, it became the turning point.
Instead of regretting the loss, I reflected deeply. If I could not work for a trekking company, why not build one? Why not create something rooted in Nepalâs proud identityâsomething inspired by the courage, discipline, and global reputation of the Gurkhas?
And so, Gurkha Encounters was bornâshortened from âGurkhaâs Encounters Overland Adventure.â What started as an idea soon became a shared dream with three partners. We did not have abundance of capital, but we had belief. We did not have degrees framed on walls, but we had determination carved into our hearts.
The real test of our values came in 2015.
When the devastating earthquake struck Nepal, it did not just shake buildingsâit shook lives, families, and entire communities. In that moment, business no longer mattered.
Without hesitation, I made a decision. We gathered all our company tents, mattresses, and sleeping bags. We loaded them into a military MI-17 helicopter. Instead of using our equipment for trekkers in the Himalayas, we air-dropped relief materials into affected areas.
I was prepared to close the company if that was the cost of saving lives.
Because entrepreneurship without humanity has no meaning.
Gurkha Encounters was never just about organizing treks. It was about responsibility. It was about service. It was about carrying the spirit of the Gurkhasânot only bravery in adventure, but compassion in crisis.
There are many more chapters to this journeyâstories from high mountain passes, cross-border expeditions, cultural exchanges, and the evolution of Nepalâs adventure tourism industry. Each experience shaped not just a company, but a philosophy.
From missing a job interview to building an institution that treats tourism as a form of national service, the journey of Gurkha Encounters reflects a simple truth:
Sometimes, the opportunities we lose are the ones that push us to create something greater.
And this is only the beginning of the story.

Namaste!
Beneath the vast Himalayan sky, where prayer flags whisper ancient blessings to the wind and snow-crowned peaks rise like guardians of eternity, the spirit of adventure finds its true home. It is in landscapes like these that Gurkha Encounters was bornânot merely as a travel company, but as a living institution of courage, culture, and transformation.
Gurkha Encounters is a distinctive luxury adventure travel company curating exceptional, tailor-made journeys across Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and India. Each expedition is thoughtfully designed for discerning travelers who seek more than destinationsâthey seek meaning, authenticity, and profound encounters with nature and heritage.
Founded and chaired by Rajendra Bajgain, Gurkha Encounters stands on a philosophy deeper than tourism. It was envisioned as a bridge between opportunity and aspiration. Much like a university of life in the Himalayas, Gurkha Encounters has served as a vocational transit for countless young highlanders arriving in Kathmandu with little more than determination in their hearts.
Many began as porters, assistants, or trainees. With guidance, discipline, and exposure to global standards of hospitality and adventure leadership, they grew into professionals. Today, the legacy speaks for itselfânearly seventy independent ventures have flourished from this foundation, from intimate mountain guesthouses to reputable adventure companies. Many of these once-beginners now lead successful enterprises at home and abroad.
This is not simply business success. It is social transformation.
Under the direct supervision of Rajendra Bajgain and a highly qualified, visionary team, Gurkha Encounters is re-energizing its missionâbringing renewed hope, innovation, and global partnerships to Himalayan tourism. It blends refined luxury with raw adventure, cultural sensitivity with entrepreneurial empowerment, and international standards with local soul.
Every journey organized by Gurkha Encounters carries three promises:
Authentic cultural immersion
Responsible and sustainable travel
Empowerment of local communities
In the towering silence of the Himalayas, greatness is not measured only by altitude, but by impact. Gurkha Encounters continues to shape both landscapes and livesâcrafting extraordinary experiences for travelers while building pathways of dignity and opportunity for the mountain communities.
We warmly invite you to join hands with Gurkha Encounters.
Walk the ancient trails.
Share the Himalayan sunrise.
Become part of a story that transforms adventure into legacy.
Best Wishes,
Rajendra Bajgain (Raj)

Happy Deepawali - a festival of colours and lights
Along with worshipping the creatures associated with Yama, Tihar celebrates the goddess of wealth for good fortune. Most of all, the festival celebrates the love and bond between siblings following the myth of how a sister saved her brother's life even when the god of death, Yamaraj himself, came to take his soul.
