🔥 Last week was the hottest 2nd July on record in the Netherlands, the hottest day of 2025¹ in the UK, and Southern Spain had the hottest June² temperature in history last Saturday at 46°C.

Chinese authorities issued their second-highest heat warning² for Beijing on one of its hottest days of the year so far, and a heatwave is on its way to Northern Vietnam³ with temperatures expected up to 42°C. 🌡️

By contrast, in the southern hemisphere winter, June finished with an unusual and record-breaking cold spell in Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay.⁴ ❄️

Dramatic changes to weather patterns like this have a severe impact on farms and farmers. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 including coffee, cocoa, and cotton. 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝟯𝟱% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 than it would have been without climate change.

As we gather for , one thing is clear: systemic, climate-resilient solutions are more urgent than ever.

Smallholder farmers grow a third of the world’s food🌾—but many still live on less than $2.15 a day.

💰At IDH, we believe this must change. In 2024, we worked with partners to close living income gaps by testing and refining innovative approaches to increase incomes for smallholder farmers. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁.
🔗🌍Here’s some highlights of the progress made with our partners in 2024:

• We supported companies with 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲—like the Income Driver Calculator and Inclusive Business Analysis—to help close living income gaps.
• Through the IDH Farmfit Fund, we helped 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 for cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire, enabling 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and investment in alternative crop value chains.
• In the coffee sector, we supported farmers in Kenya and Uganda to 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀—and explored fairer economic models of value distribution.

These efforts are laying the groundwork for scalable, long-term solutions that put better incomes at the center of agricultural value chains.

In 2024, we doubled down on our mission to transform global value chains by advancing living wages, worker representation, and safe, dignified working conditions. Because when workers thrive, businesses and communities do too.

Farming is vital—it feeds the world and employs a quarter of the population. Unfortunately, there is an unprecedented strain on agricultural value chains that is threatening supply security and placing a heavy burden on farmers.

With women being the backbone of agriculture, we spotlighted the role of gender equity and inclusivity in building resilient agricultural value chains in March. Now, we’re asking a follow-up question:

At IDH, we work with coffee companies in Uganda to support them realise the tangible benefits of investing in gender equality across their supply chains.

By empowering women and men equally through joint household decision-making, equitable access to services, and fair opportunities within their organisations, these companies are not only strengthening their businesses but also building more resilient and thriving farming communities.

🌍 Gender inequality is costing the world nearly $1 trillion in lost GDP—especially in agriculture. At IDH, we see the data: Advancing gender equality in supply chains isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a business opportunity that benefits everyone.

But as global discussions around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) evolve, businesses are facing new questions. How should companies approach gender initiatives in supply chains in today’s changing landscape?
